Urbanization was a steady but gradual process. In 1800 only 6 percent of the nations population lived in urban areas. By 1850, the number had risen to 15 percent. In 1920 it was proven that more Americans had lived in cities rather than farmlands. THis affected society because as more people moved into the city cities became dirty, unsanitized, and polluted.

To work in their new mills, companies hired young women from nearby farms. The Lowell girls is what they were called.. They usually worked for a few years in the mills before returning home to marry. These young women, and women like them in other mill towns, made and important economic contribution to American society by providing labor for the Industrial Revolution. Most sent their wages home to their families. These women changed society because they were able to provide labor for the industrial revolution.

Samuel F.B. Morse received a patent for a "talking wire", or telegraph, in 1844. The telegraph was a device that sent electrical signals along a wire. It was a new technology that was made possible by scientific discoveries about electricity. Morse also devised a code of dots, dashes, and spaces so messages could be sent. The dots stood for shot tones and the dashes stood for long tones. This system of dots and dashes became known as the Morse code. This code changes society because in wars soldiers would be able to communicate and send messages to each other without the enemy intercepting the message.

To set up and operate a spinning mill required large amounts of capital, or invested money. Capitalists supplied this money. A capitalist is a person who invests in a business to make a profit. Capitalists built factories and hired workers to run the machines. This changed society because it gave many people who didn't have the money to invent a machine that could help people in many ways. They would get this by convincing capitalists to invest in spend money on their invention.

Working hours in the mills were long, 12 hours a day 6 days a week. True farmers also put in long hours. However, farmers worked shorter hours in the winter. Mill workers, in contrast, worked the same hours all year long. This affected society because as industries grew and competition increased, employers took less interest in the welfare of their workers and working conditions eventually declined.

Eli Whitney wanted to speed of the process of making guns by having machines manufacture each part. All machine-made parts would be a like. For example, one trigger would be identical to the other. Identical parts would fit together with all other parts, and gunsmiths would not have to build each gun from scratch. Interchangeable parts would save time and money. This changed society because it made the process for gunsmiths faster and easier by being able to make more guns at once, saving money, and getting more money faster.

In 1846, Elias Howe patented a sewing machine. A few years later, Isaac Singer improved on Howe's machine. Soon, clothing makers bought hundreds of the new sewing machines. Workers could now make dozens of shirts in the time it took a sailor to sew one by hand. This machine changed society because instead of spending hours at a time sewing shirts by hand workers could so a dozen times the amount of shirts within a few hours.

In the 1780's Edmund Cartwright built a loom powered by water. It allowed a worker to produce a great deal more cloth in a day than was possible before. This machine not only changed the way goods were made in America but also in Britain. This machine changed society because it produced so much more cloth not only in America but also other countries in Europe.
