This week I got to know some of the students I will be working with for the next few weeks. I wanted to make sure I got to know them by their names/ or nicknames if they prefer. This activity although may seem minor, it allowed me to see what things I have in common with my students and what they have in common with each other.

By learning the students names and implementing " Listening to Our Language" strategy it will help create a positive culture in my class by showing my students that I take the time to listen to them and their needs. Using proactive language when I notice a student using reactive language can help to encourage the student to change their perspective. I am firm believer on approach. If I approach a student as just another student with no identity attached it is likely they will see my class as just another subject.

In week two I read about show-and-tell. This section discussed the benefits of show-and-tell and how is can help give students to opportunity to connect and express themselves.

With my four students, I thought about what would be something older kids can show and discuss that they can all relate to. I came up with music. The students and my school are ALWAYS hearing music. Music I feel can be so diverse yet so similar. The activity we did was pick 3 of their favorite songs and list who sings them, what song is it, what genre is it, when do you hear it most, and why did they choose that song. The diversity in the activity actually caught me by surprise. The students didn't pick any songs or genres I thought they would. they were all surprised to hear I love to hear country music. This is for sure an activity I will do in my future classroom.

On week three I chose to read about strategy three, posting student pictures and student work. in the reading it was mentioned how older students still should be recognized for their work. I agree completely with this because it will help the students feel proud of their work.

Being that I don't have an actual classroom at the moment I used the displayed work from the class I observe. first off, the name of the corner is my favorite, "The Fridge", it reminds me of being a kid. Displaying students work or even pictures with the students helps them feel like not only are you as a teacher proud of their work but, helps the students take ownership and be proud if their own work. A good idea would be to do an assignment at the beginning of the year posting it and then doing the same assignment at the end of the year and comparing the students growth. I think that no matter what age and child is displaying accomplishments helps build moral and visualize personal growth overall.

Week four I chose to talk about connecting with students and the importance of doing so. This is the foundation of truly getting students to not only feel comfortable enough to reach out to their teachers but ask questions and open up.

This is an idea I would do in my classroom and an idea I also suggested to the teacher I normally observe. I think this is a great way to not only connect with students but it can also be "food for thought", getting the students to think about something more than just the subject class their in.

Assigning seats and changing them frequently encourages the students to work together and helps reduces behavioral issues.

Being that I have been observing students in middle school there are 7 periods total. The students do not have name tags on desks although they still have assigned seating. I thought that as an elementary teacher this would be a good idea to implement in my classroom. The students can have a bucket to put crayons, scissors, pencils, and even stickers. Attached to the bucked will be a velcro name tag attached to it. As the students switch assign seats their name tag and bucket will go with them. I believe this is a more efficient way to move seats around the classroom.
