Thinking about my students

Positive or negative--do you observe any of your reading behaviors in your students? I know a lot of my students prefer a comfy spot to sit and read as they are reading. Another thing I noticed is that a lot of my students will do exactly what I do when I am unfamiliar with a word and read the words around it to determine meaning. Another thing that I do as a read is if I am confused with what is going on, I will keep on reading and see if it makes sense before I reread and I find my students do that often as well.

How can you make a mental connection between your own reading behaviors and those of your students? I can make a mental connection between my behaviors and my students because we use a lot of the same strategies if we are confused. When we are reading a story and the students are confused with a part, they will often keep going and see if it starts to make sense.

Connecting this to my teaching

What did you learn from this self-analysis of your reading choices, habits, and methods of decoding and comprehension? Something that I learned from this activity was that my students and I are more alike than we even realize. We all love a comfy, comfortable spot to read and relax. I also learned that I enjoy reading more when it is something that is easily understood and I think that students feel the same way. Sometimes historical fiction is tricky to understand for me if I am unsure about the time period, but learning more background knowledge can help me. I know helping my students with background knowledge before they read can help them understand and enjoy a story more.

How do you imagine understanding yourself as a reader will help you to become a better teacher of reading?

I imagine understanding myself as a reader will help me become a better teacher of reading because I can understand the struggles that students face as well as the connections we have. Students enjoy things that they are good at and we as teachers are the same way. If we can easily read a story or understand a story, we are more apt to enjoy it. If we have strategies to help us, it becomes more enjoyable.
