Contaminated water in MN

Cold Springs Brewing company is a local beer company in MN. The water well that Cold Springs uses is contaminated by a chemical called nitrate which is a chemical salt from fertilizer that local farmers and homeowners use. Hydrologists believe that the geology surrounding Cold Spring like sand, clay and granite could be aggravating the movement of the nitrate going in the ground. To help farmers are using something called perennial grain, crops that don’t need fertilizer. Homeowners are trying to help too, by downsizing the amount of fertilizer they use.

Residents in Flint, Michigan rely on bottled water for cooking, cleaning and drinking because the water in Flint is contaminated with lead and copper. For 2 years the state of Michigan was paying for a water filter and for all of Flint’s water bills but that ended because the water was approved safe to drink again without a filter. Although, the water was proven safe to drink, the state will still continue to provide water filters. Now that Flint residents are responsible to pay their water bills it is accepted that there will be many delinquent accounts. Delinquent accounts are when bills are not being paid on time. Residents with delinquent accounts will not qualify to get their old pipes replaced and the pipes could contain lead in them. The picture below shows two baby bottles filled with Flint’s water.

Water drought in California

Evey winter California relays on snowstorms for their water supply. This year California isn’t having many snowstorms. This is what they’re doing to keep their water supply up and running. For the first time ever California’s governor announced mandatory water restrictions to help with 4 years of drought. The restriction lists that every town and city in California must cut their water use to 25%. Alot of the water in California is used by farmers and in the water restrictions it does not state that the restriction applies to farmers. It is possible that there will be a restriction on water for farmers too.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Everytime there is a high temperature in the region of Salt Lake City there is a good chance that a nearby stream could decrease by an average of 3.8 percent. Because temperatures are rising and the city depends on healthy streams for it’s water supply that number is concerning. The great Salt Lake is a great alternative water source but unfortunately it is headed in the same direction. In the last 170 years the lake has shrunk to half it’s size. A university in Florida found that the great salt lake is at a high level of water vulnerability. The picture below shows a map of the great salt city lake in Utah.

All across Idaho there has been ground water in wells that has been found as contaminated with nirates, synthetic chemicals and bacteria. The water found all around Idaho is concerning to health. Because the chemicals are in the water there is not much people in Idaho can do but avoid using the water.
