For my wife and I, Pitch Perfect is our number one "guilty pleasure" movie. We probably watch it at least twice a year (wow I'm already deeply ashamed). One of the best scenes is a "Riff Off" where competing college acapella groups have to follow one another in songs by starting their song with the last word that the previous groups' song ended on (see the video at the bottom). We're going to try a "Riff Off" to discuss a Big Question as a group. If you're familiar with improve (culturally, I'm on a role right now...) this activity is similar to the "Yes, and..." approach where you always accept the person's statement and add, modify, or elaborate on the statement with your own. This activity is all about building connections: between ideas, between speakers, and between texts.

I'll start us off with my take on the question (in a real class, I'd have a student do this or I'd throw out a softball to get us rolling) then everyone can begin adding their "takes."

We're posting, and we're commenting, but we gotta do both!

How to make a post:
You can..
  • add evidence from one of the texts to support someone's post--a quote, example, etc. "Well, here's what bell hooks would say..."
  • elaborate or extend what someone is saying (maybe using that textual evidence...)
  • add a new twist
  • connect to something outside of the "class" or group that the post reminded you of
  • connect to an experience in your life 
  • link to a related, but slightly different point

BUT, you must...
  • draw a line that is connected to an existing post

You can't go off the grid and make a totally unconnected post. It may be hard at first, but trust the process and work to find those connections to your colleagues. You'll be *clap* *clap* CUT OFF! (just...I'm sorry. Watch the video!)

How to connect
  1. Make your post using the "plus" sign button
  2. Move your post to where you want it to be by clicking and dragging it around the screen.
  3. After you create your post, hover over it and you'll see a symbol with three dots. Click that. Then click "connect to a post"
  4. Click the post you want to connect to

How to us the comments:
Ask questions, ask for clarification, give kudos, challenge/push back, share a thought/story you were reminded of when reading the post.

Post in any medium--use the tech!
Padlet has a ton of things you can add to your post. You can insert gifs, embed videos, record audio/video, use images, take photos on your phone and add them. Maybe you try screen capturing your annotation of a particular passage of a text and sharing it as an image to connect to an idea. Or reply using your voice. Or draw something and take a picture. This is our chance to test the tech!

Hopefully, by the end of the activity, we'll have a big web of connections with all sorts of images/gifs/photos.

The best part about this whole activity? It is entirely free AND works spectacularly on phones if tech access is a concern. If you're using Padlet for a whole semester, I might ask students to make a free account so that their name appears. But you can also just have students sign their posts or put a team/group name in the title.
