Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

In the first stage of Erikson's Psychosocial Development, a child learns to feel secure with its caregiver. This occurs when the child is an infant. Personally, I feel that I conquered this stage very easy. I was always very attached to my parents and was very homesick whenever I would stay anywhere without my parents around. So as an infant, I would say I trusted my parents and felt very attached as I grew up.

In the second stage, from ages 1-3, a child adapts to independence and relies on one's self which leads to self-confidence. If a child doesn't allow themselves to explore and become self-reliant, they were lack confidence and doubt their decisions as they get older. When I was this age, I was always wondering around the farm house, doing my own little adventures. Whenever I needed help though, I always ran back to my parents. I do feel like this did not relate to me as I got older though. I felt more shameful and doubtful as I got older and regret a lot of choices that I have made.

In stage three, from ages 3-6, a child will begin to adapt leadership abilities and, if the stage is fully completed, will start to have group ideas. If a child does not complete this stage, they will feel less like a leader and more like a follower, struggling to lead or instruct others under their guide. Being the youngest sibling, I always felt like a follower. As I got older and my siblings moved out, I became a leader. I was very involved in school and enjoyed being in control of activities and groups. I want to become a teacher because I want to be a leader so I would say that I completed this stage in development.

Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority

Stage four is the stage where a child begins to identify themselves. They start trying things that they think they may excel in. This is a very important stage because this is where an identity is made. If a child fails this stage, they may feel less than for the rest of their lives. They may feel as if all of their peers have hobbies and activities that they excel in while they do not. Growing up, I was involved in every sport you can think of. From cheerleading to soccer to softball, basketball, and volleyball. I wanted to do it all. I knew that I wanted to be active as I got older. I was not very good at soccer and I didn't enjoy cheerleading, so once I got into middle school, I stuck with what I loved and enjoyed while also sticking with what I was good at. I played softball, volleyball, and basketball from 5th grade until I graduated. It paid off because we won state in softball when I was a Junior in high school. I found what I loved and that made me who I am today.

This is the stage where an adolescent starts focusing on the future. They may question who they are and what they really want to do with their life. If failed, a child may feel like they are going nowhere with their life and they become those around them. For me, like I said previously, I was very involved in sports. When COVID cut my senior year short, I fell into a depression that I still am not out of. I feel incomplete without sports and hate that. I didn't get a proper goodbye. That was all I was in life: an athlete. I never even thought about my future or what I would do without sports. I had a few offers to play college ball but I turned them down to start focusing on my future. I now have a lot of regret for not finding different things I enjoy.

Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation

In this stage, a young adult starts focusing on intimate, tight-knit relationships with those around them after they have defined their identity. Not completing this stage will make a person feel like they are almost lost in their relationships. Since I never fully identified myself, it was hard for me to establish a strong friend group or even an intimate relationship. I bounced around from friend to friend until I found a solid group who shared the same interests with me. I also met a boy (who I am now getting married to next August). I do feel like I conformed mor to their hobbies and interests, since all I enjoyed was sports. Now, I enjoy hunting, fishing, and reading which are things that I did not enjoy before I met my friends and fiancé.

Stage seven is a relatively long stage in life. This is the stage where a person begins to question their self-worth and their desires. They are motivated to to improve their self-worth and value. Failure of this stage will result in self-obsession. I sometimes struggle with my self-worth and lean on others to provide me with satisfaction that I am enough. I am very judgemental of myself as well as extremely insecure of what others think. I think that future me may look back and think what were you thinking wasting all the time worrying about what others think? I hope that I evolve and mature to a point where I am happy and content with myself and the life that I build for myself.

The final stage of Erikson's Psychosocial Development is when the person looks back on their life and asks themselves if they are proud of their life and achievements. Failure of this stage will result in unhappiness and a lot of regrets. Like I said in the previous slide, I already have many regrets in my life and am currently not very happy with myself or my life choices. I really hope that I can find the motivation to change myself or get help.
