Year of Impossible Goodbyes By Sook Nyul Choi

In the novel Year of Impossible Goodbyes by Sook Nyul Choi, the theme of hope carries you through is seen throughout. In the book, Sookan and her family try to make it through the war because of the hope they have that the Koreans will win and they will see the rest of their family. They try to fight even though a lot of bad events happened. To prove this, in the novel Year of Impossible Goodbyes by Sook Nyul Choi it states, “We will soon hear good news about your husband, too.” I suddenly realized how pensive Aunt Tiger looked. She was happy for us, but I knew that every day she hoped for some news of her husband. We waited in anxious excitement, and each day seemed longer than the one before. Aunt Tiger, frightened that our plan was discovered, said one day, “I think I should be more visible at party meetings”( pg. 118). Through this book, you can see that through all the struggles they went through, hope helped carry them through.

Through covid I had to struggle with many things. One of the main things I had to struggle through was not seeing my friends. We didn’t see each other for a whole year and a little bit extra and the only way we communicated was through technology. Although I couldn’t see them, the hope of eventually seeing my friends helped me get through and I could finally see them. Another thing I struggled with was school. Since we had to do school on a computer all day, it got very hard. School got very boring but I persevered to finish so I could go into school. I made it through the bad in both of these situations because of the hope for something better.

Immigrants are having a hard time trying to get to America through the border on Mexico and Texas. Some people don’t want people to come into America without permission. It got to the point that they want to put a wall up to prevent this. People try to come over to America for good reasons but others want them to stay out. In the article it states, “Wendy's parents say they took the risk to come from so far away because they did not earn enough money at home. They could not support the family.” Wendy’s family came to America because of the hope of making more money. This same hope helped them get all the way to America.

Through my school it has been hope that got us through. We have been strong as a whole even after the whole pandemic. Many people hope that we could go back to the rules and regulations before the pandemic. That same hope helps many people and students in school try to finish school strong and hope for the best next year. People also have hope that simple things like masks and social distancing are fully banished next year.
