a. This short poem provides a fictionalized account of the events leading up to and on the day of the Birmingham Church Bombing in September of 1963. It includes a conversation between a mother and her daughter about the daughter's desire to participate in protests in Birmingham, Alabama such as the Children's March in May 1963. The mother refuses and sends her daughter to church instead where the church is bombed, and the mother is only able to find her daughter's shoe in the rubble.
b. This poem could be used to provide students with insight into the differing perspectives members of the community had about the Children's March. It highlights the issue that people are often discouraged from protesting due to danger, but this attack occurred in the very place the mother in the poem believed her daughter would be safe.
