M1: Choose three factors that you think are the most important to the school reform process. Explain why you chose those three.

The lines of communication must be open so that everyone can share their ideas, comments, concerns, and so on.

I picked willingness to change because if there are members who are not on board then the change will either take longer to happen or will not happen at all. In order to make a change, you must be willing to change.

I picked funding for the obvious reason. We NEED money and support to make reform happen. This is similar to willingness to change, if we are not invested then change will either take longer to happen or will not happen at all.

M3: Describe the relationship between professional development and the
instructional strategies that are used for student learning.

The relationship between professional development and instructional strategies that are used for student learning are that they are similar. Meaning they both use similar methods to produce positive results. Both of them use collaboration, communication, cooperative learning, and models to introduce and share new or revisit old information. This gives individuals the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding that they can share with their peers or those around them in a positive learning environment.

M4: Describe the type of data, other than state assessment results, that you think will be important in the development of a school improvement plan.

I believe that data collected over a student's academic career (5 years) will give educators some information on how or where the student either became successful or not as successful. Meaning how well did they do in certain classes, was the teacher male or female, how long had the teacher been at the school, what was the student's attendance rate, etc. This gives a foundation and some background on the student. I also think the student's overall work (i.e artifacts) should also be looked at. Maybe the student shows improvement in an essay because the student has a way of expressing their knowledge in words. Maybe the student created an experiment because the student can really show their content knowledge with their hands. If we truly believe that each student learns a different way then how can we expect them to all assess the same way? This makes no sense!!!

M5: Would you prefer to use a data carousel or a data dashboard? Why?

I would prefer to use a data dashboard. I think it gives a more well rounded, global picture of what needs to be improved. It also shows what is working. This could allow for higher expectations and higher improvements. I think you need more to go on then test scores. The only thing that I wish it had was more teacher input. Teachers work with students day in and day out so they should be considered when it comes to learning goals and student achievement. Personally, I know that I spend more time with some of my students than their parents. This is not a point finger statement. All I am saying is that I might know them better than most. So, my input should matter.

M6: Describe one idea that you think is important from the chapter that you read for the jigsaw discussions.

I read Chapter 10 for the jigsaw discussions. I think that when students are absent they miss important learning experiences that they cannot make up. No matter how hard we try to get them caught up. I liked that there were strategies listed that could help. I don't know if this was important from the reading but the most interesting that I found was that schools lose funding when students are absent. So, this makes me question if schools want students there more for funding or for learning. I would hope that it would be the latter but let's be real for a moment. There has got to be schools out there that only care about funding so they need all butts in the seats. This is so sad to me. Schools should not lose funding because a student is too lazy to come to school. Or can't come because they are too sick. Or can't be on time because their family only has one car and there are 10 people in the house (I mean this is a whole different conversation).

M7: Which statement (yours or one from a classmate) in the L portion of the K-W-L activity do you think is the most important? Copy and paste it onto your Padlet sticker. Then briefly describe why you chose this statement.

It can be easy to get lost in all of the information associated with an SIP, so keeping the big picture in mind (student success) can help the process from derailing.

I chose this one because I felt like it encompassed several of the other key points. First, there is a ton of information/data to go through and getting lost or overwhelmed will not make this process any easier. Second, student success is the BIG picture. We want all students to have the opportunity to be successful. If we keep this in mind, then egos and overbearing individuals might check their issues at the door so the real work can be done. At least, I hope this to be true. It was not in the case of my group but this is why I don't volunteer for programs/projects like this.

M8: Summarize the most important point that you learned about the school
improvement process.

The most important point that I learned about the school improvement process is that data can be vast and overwhelming. You have to be organized, determined, and vigilant. If you do not possess these qualities then you may be in trouble and the process may take longer than it should. Personally, I still feel that being on a school improvement committee is not for me. I can see where there might be a need for it in some schools but not all. Schools will never have 100% attendance or graduation rates. We analysis and try to improve school that have percentages in the 90's or higher. When is it good enough? I mean school is not the right fit for all students. I wish it was but I am also a realist. I guess I am saying for a system that rewards students for just participating...how can you say do better, do more?
