The place where my journey began. The actual plan was a trip through the baltic states to finally cross over with the ferry from Tallin to Helsinki - and that in 3 and not 30 hours - that's how long the ferry from Travemünde took. In the end we all arrived safe and sound, besides wonderful sunsets on the wide open spaces of the baltic sea and the first contact to the so exotic finnish inhabitants. - Well in the end we noticed that finnish people are like we are, human beeings with two arms and two legs and very similar world view. Who would have thought...?

After two weeks of quarantine and the slow settling in in Kouvola, including of course a sightseeing tour and getting to know the very sociable other international students, we made the Finnish capital unsafe for one weekend. Wonderfully different food was tasted, a street food market was raided and the one or other bar was tested. Besides those activities it was also very enjoyable just wandering around the city and seeing all the beautiful buildings and places it has to offer. In the afternoon we visited Suomenlinna, which is indeed a very unique place of historic buildings and remainings from the Russian-time. It I’ve got the expression, that it is like a small town and i would love to live there for a while.

Hopefully we get to see more of this very forested and increasingly colder country. In any case, further visits to Finnish cities are planned (Porvoo is already checked off) as well as a definitive trip to Lapland. Due to the current exceptional situation, the contact to local people has unfortunately not worked out so well yet, but the one or other Finnish friendship would be desirable.

Soo, we went to Parpalandia in the Autumn break, and we really had a great time here. We were quite lucky seeing the first snow there - for some of our student colleagues it was the first snow in their entire life. The landlord offered some real Finnish/snowy experiences, such as a husky ride, seeking a view at the northern lights and riding a snowmobile (great fun!). Also we had two saunas there, which were used 24/7. I really enjoyed the traditional way of the sauna, which includes showering yourself in it by heating up a tank of water by yourself. We went to Lapland with 18 people, which I already knew all of them at least a bit, and it’s really heartwarming to see, how fast a group of people can grow together through an event like this. Also I had a very good experience with the Finish lost and found system, which only works that good because the people are very honest and try to return lost items to their owners.
