Digital technology makes it possible to connect students and teaching staff across geographical distances offering the possibility to mix physical and virtual participation, share similar classes between different institutions and allow multi-campus universities to increase the selection of courses at each campus. Norwegian universities have considerable experience of both designing and repurposing courses in these types of environment. Teaching via telepresence has the potential for significant disruption and also raises profound questions of pedagogy. Will ‘holography’ remove the final barriers between the co-located and the distant, or will it lead to new barriers between teacher and learner? What are the unique affordances and particular challenges of educational experiences such as these? Would the holographic academic become just another educational technology gimmick, or could it become the next learning frontier? 

In this workshop we used a speculative design approach to imagine a possible future where we need to plan for the use of such tools. Participants were encouraged to think ahead and develop a set of approaches for supporting those that are preparing to enter into this brave new world. In doing so, they gained insights into the potentials and challenges of this tool as an emerging educational technology for bringing new dimensions to blended and distance learning.

Across the EU a directive on web accessibility has brought the needs of disabled learners sharply into focus. Complying with the new guidance sets a real challenge for universities and public sector bodies. AV professionals need to ensure that our tools and multimedia resources are used to best advantage to enhance the learning experience. 

In this session, Alistair McNaught an accessibility consultant and founding member of the UK Digital Accessibility Working Group, unpicks technical accessibility from the needs of disabled students. The student perspective on the learning experience is the most important of all and we welcomed Karolina to share her thoughts as a student. More specifically she spoke from the perspective of being a female student working in the environments of professional AV and music technology that are traditionally male dominated.
