703 Padlet #2: Anger, memories, and ignorance. by Simone Sylvester

The people in The Giver seem like they don't question the rules of their society. They have no memory of the past, so how can they? They don't know any better. As Jonas begins to get more memories, he starts to get more angry. Why does Jonas feel this way? How does Jonas' anger connect to the quote "Ignorance is bliss?" SPICY (optional): What things do you personally wish you never knew because it made you angry or caused you pain?

I think Jonas gets more and more angry while resaving all these dreams because 1) he might have been upset that his society hid all there history ( including all the bad things they did) from the society's people because the society was to selfish and ignorant to share it. this connects to the quote " ignorance is bliss" because if the people lack the knowledge of what has happened in the pass they have no choice to be happy because thee was no tragedy before that they can remember.

I believe that Jonas feels angry as he is learning all these new things, because he didn’t know what exactly to expect , saying something is painful is completely different from feeling the pain yourself. I also feel as if he is starting to question why he hasn’t learned about this sooner & what else his society’s leadership could be hiding from him. This connections to the quote, “Ignorance is bliss”, because for 12 years of Jonas life he has never known anything other perfect, so to see and feel the opposite of that worry’s and angers him. This cause him to wonder why only one person is supposed to know this.
This definitely relates to me, because in my preschool and elementary school, they never really spoke about race or slavery, but even when they hinted at those topics it made me mad and uncomfortable because I was the first person people stared at as the only black girl. From a young age my parents have taught me about those topics and that I have to work twice as hard to get the same amount of credit.

I believe Jonas is angry when he starts to get more memories because he probably is starting to dislike the elders since they stop everyone in the society from asking questions about the past and what happened but Jonas probably wants everyone to learn about the great things that happened in the past and he is mad that the Elders make sure only the Recievers learn about that and Jonas probably thinks that, that is very unfair for the rest of the people that live inside of the society and might want to learn about what happened in the past

I believe Jonas gets more angry when he gets more and more memories because he is probably going to start asking questions about why the Elders decided to destroy the things from the past. Since no one else in the society knows what they lost, he is probably also angry at the Elders because all the good and bad memories are hidden from the society. He might also be mad because he and the Giver are the only ones who have experienced the pain, and no one else in the society knows what he goes through. This connects to the phrase "Ignorance is bliss” because "Ignorance is bliss” is kinda like “the less you know, the better”. If you do not know about something, you do not worry about it. People have no choice but to be ignorant when they can’t remember anything bad.

I think that Jonas starts to get more angry when he gets more memories because he is realizing that life isn't as simple and straightforward as he thought. He is beginning to understand that sometimes people used to be allowed to make their own decisions, meaning that a lot of bad ones were made. He also might be angry that he can't tell anyone about how the world once was and he wants to make everyone aware of it. And he could be starting to question the world around him and wondering why no one else is doing the same. This connects to the quote "Ignorance is bliss" because Jonas's life was so easy before he learned the truth. When he was ignorant, he just happily went along with life and lived in peace. One thing that I wish I didn't know because it caused me pain was that I accidentally commented a misinformed statement on one of my favorite youtuber's videos, and he actually REPLIED and called me out on it in a not-so-nice way (this youtuber has over 500 thousand subscribers by the way).

I think that Jonas begins to feel angry when the gains the memories because he may think it's unfair to have everything be the same, and to live in a world where nobody can make their own choices. And he may feel mad that his friends, family, and people around him are satisfied with the society they live in, and see nothing wrong with it when there is a lot wrong. He doesn't have have the ability to change the world by himself, and show everyone a truly amazing yet imperfect world, and that can be frustrating to know. Jonas's anger connects to the quote "ignorance is bliss" because now that he knows more about the world he's in, and that it being "normal" and "perfect" was all a lie, he's now overthinking it and upset with the truth. Knowing that can't make a big change while just being a kid.

I believe that Jonas feels the way he does is because the community from where he is from, where he grew up, what he has did in his past, was all a lie. Jonas feels angry because his community of where he has loved and grew to be where he is now has betrayed him and all his years of living. His parents doing what the government, the Chief elders has instructed them to do for Jonas was a lie. Jonas' anger connects to the quote "Ignorance is bliss" because the phrase ignorance is bliss means that a person who does not know about a problem does not worry about it. This connects to him because all his life and his family and everybody in the community never worried about the past and what had happened back then to their beloved yet crucial and lying community. The reason being is because no one has learned about the past, so if they never gained information about the past, they are not able to worry about it and ask questions. Jonas has never gained information about his community, therefore he is not able to ask questions to gain intel about his community and why they do the things they do. He is now starting to get angry because he was never curious enough, because his community would place chastisement upon those who were unique and so called "different". Things that I personally wish I never knew about what where the money actually goes to in the church. On a Sunday, I found out that some of that money and those tithes that we give as a portion of our living in church goes to the Pastors and not toward the house of God and better it. :0

That emotion can only go so far, but the more he knows, the more he might feel lost. The feeling of thinking you knew everything and then suddenly that feeling disappears.

I believe that Jonas begins to feel more and more angered as he gets more memories because he soon realizes and figures out that the Elders could've been hiding something from everyone in his society. That kind of makes him feel mad about this sudden realization, and makes him feel angered and frustrated. He feels upset about everyone he knew being lied to by people that they looked up to, people they wanted and wished to be. He's realizing this world he knew, wasn't what he was told, what he saw, what he "knew." This is why i think that he was so angered, and that anger built up, as he received more and more memories.

I believe Jonas is feeling angered because of what the elders have been hiding which is emotions, in Jonas's society they don have the opportunity to experience love or joy because they cant experience sadness or hate. This refers to the quote "ignorance is bliss" because when people don't know what something is they have no need to care for it or they have no need to want it. This idea reflects through "The Giver" as people are color blind, once Jonas figures out what color is he gets angered that him and his community couldn't experience it. Personally i wish i never new about third world countries cause seeing people be so poor kinda hurts.

I think Jonas is getting angrier because the memories he receives make him go through all kinds of negative emotions and he doesn't have anybody to go through them with, he probably feels as if he's all alone and that he's the only one who can understand what he feels, he also has to lie to his friends and family about what he's going through, and that only helps to make him feel more alone. I think his anger connects with the quote "Ignorance is bliss" because, if Jonas had never learned about the negative memories of the past then he'd never have to feel all the complicated emotions he now feels after receiving them, he wouldn't have to lie to the people around him about his emotions and dreams, and he wouldn't have argued with his friends the way he did. If Jonas had never received those memories in the first place, then he could've still have a more positive outlook on his life and life in the past, and wouldn't have to be put through all the hardships that he's been put through.

The community was suppose to just grow up, not question the past or their history. With the next generation just following along. They weren't able to learn about like we do today in school. I think Jonas is also getting mad because they didn't JUST hide the past, they hid the emotions that came with it. So with their being sameness to keep everyone happy and in ignorance. Jonas had never felt amazing and simple things like pain, snow, cold air, sun burn, seeing rainbows and it colors. It like he was missing an experience of life and the elders didn't care to mention it.
