Assessing Agricultural Environmental Impact by MedDiet4Health

You will be divided into three groups, each tasked with comparing the ecological footprint of two countries using the Global Footprint Network. In your group, examine the carbon, water, and land footprints of your assigned countries, making notes and taking screenshots as needed. Present your findings in this padlet, interacting with your peers and agree on a common answer to the following questions in your presentation: - How did the ecological footprints of the two countries you compared vary regarding carbon, water, and land use? -What were the most notable differences you found? - What factors do you believe contribute to these differences? Consider elements such as agricultural practices, climate and economic development.

Based on the data, Slovakia has a bigger ecological footprint (4.16 Earths) compared to Greece (3.78 Earths). This means that if everyone lived like the average person in Slovakia, we would need more than four Earths to sustain that level of resource use, which is not sustainable.

The biggest contributor in both countries is the carbon footprint, with Slovakia’s being higher (2.38 Earths vs. 1.92 Earths in Greece). This suggests Slovakia relies more on fossil fuels or energy-intensive industries. Greece, on the other hand, has a larger cropland footprint (0.998 Earths), probably due to its strong agricultural sector.

This is expected since Turkey has a significantly bigger population and more resources ate consumed.

Both countries have the highest impact from carbon emissions but Turkey also uses a lot more cropland, forest products, and grazing land than Greece. This suggests that Turkey depends more on agriculture and forestry to support its population.

We think that even though larger countries naturally use more resources, they can still take steps to reduce carbon emissions, manage forests responsibly, and use land more efficiently.

Turkey has a significantly larger ecological footprint than Slovakia, mainly due to its higher carbon emissions and extensive agricultural activities. With a much larger cropland and carbon footprint, Turkey's environmental impact is far greater, reflecting its larger population, industry, and energy consumption. In contrast, Slovakia, with its smaller size and lower resource consumption, has a much smaller ecological footprint. While both countries rely on natural resources, Turkey’s impact is more pronounced across all categories, from cropland and forest products to carbon emissions.
