1. The Big Ben clock tower

Firstly, I want to introduce is an architectural work that has become so famous and associated with.

- When everyone mentions the land of fog, most people will immediately think of these British symbols. That is the Big Ben clock tower.

- The current official name of this tower is the Elizabeth clock tower, named after Queen Elizabeth II - who was ruling the UK at that time. And Big Ben is the name of the bell installed inside the tower. The clock tower is also mistakenly called St. Stephen. On Queen Elizabeth II's 60th birthday parade, the British Parliament announced that Big Ben would be renamed Elizabeth Tower on 4th June 2012.

- Big Ben Tower was part of Charles Barry's design for a new castle after the Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire on the night on 16th October 1834. The tower was designed in the Victorian Gothic style.
* The structure of Big Ben clock tower has nothing to impress visitors.

The structure has three distinct parts: the Elizabeth tower, the grand bell, and the grand clock. Big Ben – the original name for the clock bell – was agreed upon as the name of all three parts. The Elizabeth Tower - as it was named in 2012 - was designed by English architect Charles Charles Barry. With the tower standing on the Houses of Parliament, the four clocks are designed to be both beautiful and precise. The pendulum is 13 feet long, weighs 660 pounds, and is suspended from a spring steel band for 1/64th of an inch, with a span every two seconds.

A small pile of pennies (31mm in diameter, 9.4g) is placed on top of the pendulum to adjust the time of the watch. Adding a coin has the effect of enhancing the position of the center of the pendulum population. This results in a decrease in the effective length of the roller, which in turn increases the rate of oscillation of the pendulum. A coin changes the speed of a clock by about 0.4 seconds a day.

* Is the clock wrong?

Since London was the target of many enemies during the war, Big Ben had to keep its records private. During the two years of World War I, the bells were silenced and the dials were not illuminated at night to avoid attack by the Germans. The dials went black in September 1939 when German planes started the blitz of World War II.

Several external circumstances have affected the accuracy of Big Ben's clocks for many years. On New Year's Eve 1962, the clock was slowed down due to heavy snow and ice resulting in Big Ben ringing the New Year's bell 10 minutes late. The first and only failure occurred in August 1975. The air brake speed regulator of the kinematic mechanism broke after more than 100 years of use.

- After 12 pm on August 21, 2017, visitors to London can no longer hear this familiar iconic bell. The Big Ben clock was silent for the next 4 years to serve the renovation, the bell has returned to Londoners and visitors in 2021.

- To this day, it is still the largest clock tower with bells in the world.

Interesting things about Big Ben clock tower

Big Ben clock tower is considered the symbol of London. This is the common name of the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster, in which Big Ben is the largest bell (weighing about 13.5 tons) of the tower's 5 bells.

In June 2012, Big Ben was officially renamed Elizabeth Tower to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. However, people are still used to calling it, Big Ben.

Construction of Big Ben began in 1843 and was completed in 1859. In the face of a fierce Nazi attack during World War II, Big Ben still stood despite damage on one side. Because of this, the watch is considered a symbol of victory for the British.

Up to now, the Big Ben clock is 179 years old, rings every 15 minutes, and emits "bubbles" when the time is right.

In 2015, Big Ben's clock was found to be running 6 seconds behind. To fix this problem, the engineers adjusted by adding or subtracting coins to make the pendulum work correctly. Big Ben is tilted to the northwest at an angle of 0.26 degrees. According to calculations, it will take about 10,000 years for Big Ben to have the same tilt as Italy's leaning tower of Pisa.

The Big Ben clock stopped ringing for 2 years during the first world war.

Inside Big Ben tower, there is no elevator. Therefore, those who are allowed to enter Big Ben must walk up a 334-step staircase.

The 4 faces of Big Ben are cleaned by experts every 5 years.

The bell of the Big Ben clock was used as the official BBC radio tune on February 17, 1924.

2. Tudor Rose - England's national flower

The second symbol of England that I want to send to you today is the Tudor rose.

- Since long ago, the rose has always been a flower associated with Saint George - the patron saint of the English. That's why royal families always use the rose as their symbol.

- The Tudor rose became England's official national flower in the 15th century after the country's civil war ended. If you learn a little bit about the history of England, you will know about the War of the Roses - the war between the Lancaster clan (with the red rose symbol) and the York clan (with the symbol of the white rose). The statue is a white rose. And the name Tudor is actually the name of the Tudor dynasty, not a flower name.

- Today, the Tudor rose is considered the official symbol of England, although not of Great Britain. In fact, each of the four countries that make up this nation uses its own symbol.

(Thistle - Scotland's symbol; Daffodils - Welsh symbol; Tamarind tree – symbol of Northern Ireland)

As one of the symbols of England, of course, the Tudor rose also carries certain meanings:

Right from its history, the Tudor rose is a combination of the Lancaster and York rose images. It implies reconciliation, peace, and healing.

Roses are often known as symbols of kings, lords, and queens, implying wealth and nobility. Therefore, choosing the rose as the national flower partly shows the elegance and nobility of the English royal family.

In addition, the rose is also widely known in folklore as the flower of burning and passionate love. It is a symbol of reverence, passion, and eternity.

- The Tudor Rose is found on the official emblems of the Guardians of the Tower of London and the Queen's Guard. It also appears for many years on the reverse side of the 20-pence coin.

- In addition, fans of rugby know very well that the Tudor rose is present on the jerseys of the players of the England national team. The Tudor rose also appears on the coat of arms of the university town of Oxford.

4. Bulldog - the national dog of England

Next, I want to introduce that is Bulldog. Do you know it?

-The Bulldog is a British breed of dog of mastiff type. It may also be known as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog. Bulldogs are believed to be descended from the legendary Colossus of the ancient Romans. It is commonly kept as a companion dog; in 2013 it was in twelfth place on a list of the breeds most frequently registered worldwide.

- Origin of the Bulldog Breed: With the advent of World War II and Winston Churchill becoming Prime Minister, Churchill's attitude of defiance against the Nazis (and possibly his physical appearance) earned him the nickname “The English Bulldog”.

- Appearance:

The Bulldog has long been one of the closest friends of the English people. With a body that is not too big, medium size but very muscular body, plus a wrinkled face that looks both stupid and very cute, this dog has won many people's hearts. The coat is short, flat, and sleek with colors of red, fawn, white, brindle.

Bulldogs are one of the few breeds whose tail is naturally short and either straight, screwed or thin and thus is not cut or docked as with some other breeds. A straight tail is a more desirable tail according to the breed standard set forth by the BCA if it is facing downward, not upward.

The breed standards are 55lb (25 kg) for a male and 50lb (23 kg) for a female.

- Temperament

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), a Bulldog's disposition should be "equable and kind, resolute, and courageous (not vicious or aggressive), and demeanor should be pacifist and dignified. These attributes should be countenanced by the expression and behavior".

Breeders have worked to reduce/remove aggression from these dogs. Most have a friendly, patient, but stubborn nature. Bulldogs are recognized as excellent family pets because of their tendency to form strong bonds with children. Generally, Bulldogs are known for getting along well with children, other dogs, and other pets.

- Price: As one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, it's not surprising that the English Bulldog is among the most expensive in the world. On average, to own a Bulldog you need to spend about 2,500 - 9,000 USD / dog (equivalent to 6 - 20 million VND).

- The Bulldog has a longstanding association with British culture; the BBC wrote: "to many the Bulldog is a national icon, symbolizing pluck and determination"
Today, not only in England, the Bulldog has become a popular pet around the world.

5. James Bond

The last one, this is James Bond.

- James Bond or agent 007 is an English secret agent created by the late writer Ian Fleming in 1953. Fleming portrayed Bond in 12 novels and 2 collections of short stories.

- The character's name comes from the name of American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbean bird expert and author of the field guide Birds of the West Indies. Fleming was enthusiastic about birdwatching and had a copy of Bond's book in hand. He later explained to the ornithologist's wife: "It occurred to me that this short, gritty, Anglo-Saxon and masculine name was just what I needed", and so the second James Bond was born".

- Since James Bond novels appear in almost every field of media such as television, film, comic books, etc. Especially the 007 spy movie series, it is unknown how many parts have been produced and we still don't get bored. The James Bond series is currently the longest-running continuous series of all time and has grossed $7.04 billion, making it the sixth highest-grossing film series in history. It started in 1962 with the movie Dr. No with actor Sean Connery as Bond. As of 2020, the series produced by Eon Productions has 24 seasons. Specter (2015) is the closest James Bond film, starring Daniel Craig with his fourth time playing the Bond agent in the Eon series.

- Bond films are famous for a number of features, from the soundtrack to the theme songs that have been nominated for multiple Oscars and won twice. Several other key cross-cutting elements include Bond's cars, his guns, and the equipment he was provided with by Q Branch. Each film also focuses on depicting Bond's relationships with various women, sometimes referred to as "Bond girls".

- In addition, the image of James Bond also shows the image of a standard English gentleman, amateur, romantic, and extremely interesting.

- James Bond is perhaps the greatest representative of England cinema.
