I am from Brockport New York which is an hour outside of Rochester New York. It is about a three and a half hour drive from Boro to my hometown. When i first came to Edinboro I was a Nursing Major planning to specialize in pediatrics. After working in the hospital as a patient care technician I realized that my heart was more with teaching. This came to no surprise to my family as both of my parents are also teachers! I’m Kendra and I’m a “Buffalonian”! I live just outside of Buffalo, NY. My Mom was born and raised in Guys Mills though and she recently moved back to that area so I visit her often still! I have a beagle/bloodhound mix named Rosie, a pretty tuxedo kitten named Diamond, and a fat, orange cat named Oliver. I have been married for almost 11 years now and have three young children, Mya (10), Logan (6) and Madilyn (3). My older two are in a hybrid school plan (grades 5 and K) so that means they are home three days a week and in school the other two days of the week. We started off in September really struggling but it seems that we are finally getting into a routine now! I work as a Teacher Assistant at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf and I LOVE my job. As a hard of hearing student alumni myself, I am thrilled to be back in the school but on the other side. I’m a huge advocate of deaf education and so it’s no surprise that I’m majoring in deaf education. And YES! I am proficient in ASL and am a huge advocate of ASL education as well, for all ages, from birth to 120. ;-) I was lucky to have a Mom who made communication a priority since my hearing loss diagnosis at age 2. I am looking forward to this class as I truly believe that part of being the best teacher I can be, means to be able to be resourceful and be able to teach in any condition, including virtual during pandemics! I have seen many of the teachers I work with now, struggle with the virtual aspect and my heart goes out to them and all their tears of frustration. I don’t want to be struggling so much like that. Technology is ever changing too, and SO fast! If I don’t keep up now, how will I be able to later? It’s also a bonus to be able to be in the know while having children at home learning virtually (and being ready for those teen and social media years!). Best of luck to you all this semester and during these crazy times! A fun fact about me is I just turned 30 recently and was feeling really “stuck”. Almost like an early mid life crisis, and so I did something impulsive and something just for myself-I joined an aerial dance class! I found my way back to my high school sweet heart and love every cliché we fulfill in our marriage.  We have 4 beautiful children; Ava(11), Colt(9), Amelia(7), and Liam(6) and really embrace the big family lifestyle.
I worked as a substitute teacher and student support AID the last few years while my youngest was still home but found I was ready to lead my own classroom. I am hoping to learn absolutely everything I can from this class. I feel slightly out of touch with current technology and hope to catch up a bit, while also learning how to best apply that to my professional needs. The last year "teaching" at home with my children has been wonderful for us, but it definitely showed me how much a difference the educators knowledge can make.
