This link shows multiple ideas for teaching and reinforcing upper and lower case letter recognition. Some of these activities would be better in a small group setting during ELA rotations while others could be used as morning work for the whole class to complete.

In order to accommodate my ELL students, I will spend a lot of time modeling the worksheets and teaching the letters. We will spend at least a few days on each letter until they feel confident.

I can also pair them with a student in the class that has a strong foundational knowledge of their upper and lower case letters.

Another way that I can modify their work is by pairing the English letter with the letter that is similar in their native language. I can also use pictures to coincide with the letters. These can be made into anchor charts that can be displayed around the classroom for constant reinforcement.

Many of the activities that are listed here involve a lot of fine motor skills that some students may not have. In order to accommodate students that may have delayed fine motor skills, I can have them work with a partner. This will allow them to collaborate and work on their letter recognition while not getting overly frustrated by tasks that may be too difficult. I can also allow them extra time to complete their cutting and gluing tasks.

Another group of students that may need additional support would be my students that have shorter attention spans or need a lot of redirecting to stay on task. For these students that need to be active while working, I could allow them to sit on an exercise ball while completing their work. I could also plan for them to do the longer activities after finishing something more active like PE or recess.

For some of my students that are still struggling with letter recognition, I can use ELA rotation time to reinforce what they have learned in a small group setting. These activities would be hands on and allow the students to engage with the letters in a fun way. I want to keep the information fun and fresh for the students so that they do not get frustrated or tired of trying.

In order to assess my students' understandings of upper and lower case letters, I can show them the letters and have them say them out loud to me. I can do this at the beginning of the year, and at the end of the first trimester once we have finished going over each letter. This will allow me to see what their level is at the beginning of the year and how they progress.
