We quickly learn that Troy's dream of being a pro baseball player was ripped right from underneath him because of his skin color. Troy's own shattered sense of hope affects and distorts the aspirations and dreams of everyone around him. Troy is trying to protect his sons from wasting their time, and effort just like he did. "Life don't owe you nothing, you owe it to yourself." This shows responsibility because it is saying don't just wait around and wait for life to give you something. Get up and grind to make sure you get what you want. Put in all the effort that is possible and fulfill that desire. Life doesn't owe you anything. You gotta work for it.

Troy cares about the hustle and making money. He doesn’t want his sons to fail at their dreams and be a bum. Troy does not want his sons following their dreams. He wants them to work at a stable job and help support the family. Troy doesn’t want this because he thinks his kids suck at what they do but because He doesn’t want them to not make it because of their skin color, just like him.
