Troy is the Protagonist of Fences. Troy lives in the shadow of what could, and what should. Troy has been mainly shaped by the effects racism has had on his life. We quickly learn that Troy's dream of being a pro baseball player was ripped right from underneath him because of his skin color. Troy's own shattered sense of hope affects and distorts the aspirations and dreams of everyone around him. Troy is trying to protect his sons from wasting their time, and effort just like he did. Troy can't see anything practical in professions like musician, football player, baseball player, etc,,, But at the same time, he is having an affair with Alberta which isn't very practical.

FEARLESS
"I ain't worried about death. I done seen him. I done wrestled with him."
Troy talks as if he isn't scared of anything and talk like he is ready to face death. Troy sees death as something he can "wrestle" with. This makes him FEARLESS

AUTHENTIC
"Liked you? Who the hell say I got to like you?"
Although Troy loves his son he doesn't want to like him in fear of Cory turning out like him. He wants to be his father not his friend. Troy works hard to provide for his son, so we know he defiantly cares about Cory. Not once has Troy enjoyed his relationship with Cory.

I do sympathize with Troy because he had a tough up bringing. No one ever taught him how to be a good dad, he had to figure it out on himself. One of Troys major strengths was his ability to provide for his family. He never had any left over money to spend on himself. Anything and everything he ever got went straight to Rose.

This relates to Troy because it shows how WORDS HURT. He thought he was setting an example and getting Cory ready for the real world when he was yelling at him, but really he was just pushing their relationship further and further apart. For example when Troy said, "Liked you? Who the hell says I got to like you?" this hurt Cory so bad. It wasn't Troy's intention to hurt Cory but he didn't realize that it was damaging Cory so much. Cory thought his father hated him. Thinking your father hates you, the person that is supposed to be your role model must be rough.

The Theme of Fences is Responsibility.
"Life don't owe you nothing, you owe it to yourself." This shows responsibility because it is saying don't just wait around and wait for life to give you something. Get up and grind to make sure you get what you want. Put in all the effort that is possible and fulfill that desire. Life doesn't owe you anything. You gotta work for it.

“Without hustle, talent will only take you so far.” Getting a good job and starting a family was important to him. Troy cares about the hustle and making money. He doesn’t want his sons to fail at their dreams and be a bum. Troy does not want his sons following their dreams. He wants them to work at a stable job and help support the family. Troy doesn’t want this because he thinks his kids suck at what they do but because He doesn’t want them to not make it because of their skin color, just like him.
