Exceptional learners
Learners are different and they have different abilities. Some learners are academically gifted and some do not adapt easily to new things. At school children are expected to be treated equally. But we cannot hide the fact that children are classified according to their abilities. Teachers pay attention to learner that are proficient. They forget about those who are low achievers.

Last year I was working as an assistant teacher in one of the primary schools that are located in my area. I was teaching grade 3. I started around November. I was surprised to see that there are learners who couldn't write their names, read or count. I tried to assist them but their teacher said I was wasting my time because they won't listen to me, besides they are going to the next grade next year because they repeated a grade in the foundation phase. I made a decision that I will not listen to their teacher, I wanted to help them and I did. Unfortunately I arrived late at school it was November and schools were about to close for December holidays. But I saw the progress, they became comfortable and they were willing to learn. They only needed someone who was going to be patient with them and show them love.

Learners are unique and they are special. We need to pay attention to what ever thing they do. Learners who experiences difficulties with academics, it must be your responsibility to expose that child to him/herself. Allow each and every learner to show his/her strengths and weaknesses. Provide solutions to help them. Make them feel safe with you. After all it takes a village to raise a child. Let us love children with their uniqueness and let us stop undermining their abilities.

I believe that as teachers we should be able to notice a struggling learner and be able to help them academically because we are not the same some students are not gifted academically they have other abilities and we as teachers we should also make them understand that they have special gifts as others,it's just that we as people we have different abilities.

Teachers they only focus to those who has potential in school and that is not good thing instead of lifting up all learners at the same time they just go with those who are academically gifted that is not professional at all.

I totally agree with you I was also a victim of a teacher not paying much attention to slow learners and moving forward with the intelligent ones.
This is one reason that made me change from Pure Math to Mathematical literacy not that it was hard but the teacher had no patience, she always expected that if one learner knew the answer or chapter everyone should.
After I changed to Mathematical literacy my performance began to change, I was more active in class the teacher always made sure that she left no one behind, she created an environment where I personally was able to ask as many questions as I wanted To. Now that are the kinds of teachers we need to be.
