Cultural Context

I think that the culture may appear confusing to some (after all I can admit myself that it’s pretty backwards and traditional). There are a lot of small Punjabi words intertwined into the movie and conversations between family, Sat-Siri-Akala (sas, ree, kal) means hello and goodbye, all elder women are called ‘Aunty’ and the turbans, bangles and pictures of Guru Nanak are all symbols in Sikhism. A lot of Indian immigrants work in Heathrow so there’s a lot of references to that, and in terms of the food, there’s tonnes of traditional Indian foods mentioned there. The engagement ceremony is also a very important part of the wedding, because you don’t get down on one knee, your proposal is a huge ceremony. The mother does a lot of giving out about how Jess will never find a husband if she can’t cook, because usually in an arranged marriage it’s like applying for a job, the more on your CV the better. It’s not appropriate and it’s disrespectful to wear short clothes, so bare arms and legs aren’t seen as a good thing in Indian Culture. - Asha .

Jess and Jules' situation with their families are similar when it comes to playing football but Jules' situation is a lot easier than Jess'. Both of their mothers don't agree with them playing football as it is not 'feminine', but Jules' mother still lets her play, but on the other hand Jess' mother has forbidden her from playing football. Jules' father is completely happy with her playing the sport and he helps her train. Jess' father isn't as harsh as her mother but he still agrees with her mothers point of view. Because of Jess' situation she has to hide the fact that she still trains on the girls team and that she kept the football boots that she got.

All she is asking for is for her parents to support her.

~Isabel

Jess' family believe to be a "proper woman" you are suppose to be lady like and not play sports. This is not a true comment for to be a "proper woman" yout have to respect other people's decisions. Jess' family think a "proper woman" should marry an weathly Indian man and cook and clean while he is at work. I do not think is right for love is love and you should be able to marry whoever you would like no matter what race or religion.

Jules’ mum is looking at it in a more sexist way. She’s concerned about vanity.
I think that the coach (Joe) is quite a conservative character who doesn’t reveal too much about himself and I think he has a story that we haven’t heard yet.

Ella x

I think Jules' mother wants Jules to be more of a girly girl but doesn't have a major issue with her being sporty. When it comes to Jess' parents though, they have such a strong aversion to their daughter playing sports. They think cooking would be more worthy of her time as it will look more appealing to her future husband.

~Isabel

Jess’ culture is very strict on what each genders role in the relationship is, Jess can’t play football because girls aren’t supposed to play sport and they should marry young- as Jess’s mother was. They are also very strict on women revealing themselves to strangers- bare legs, arms showing things like that. It’s deemed as improper.

I feel that Jess has a very strict culture where playing football is frowned apon and her parents and relatives all believe that she should be learning to manage a household and preparing to get married. However Jess has no interest in getting married and all she wants to do is to play football, which her parents disapprove of and I feel this is why she connects with Jules as Jules' mother strongly disapproves of her daughter playing football and would like her to become more feminine, as well as both of their strong passion for football. I also feel that because of her culture whatever Jess does it affects her family. For example when Pinkys fiancés relatives see Jess and Jules hugging and they think she is kissing a white man, which in their culture is frowned apon as they believe that an Indian woman must marry an Indian man. It is also visible that Jess' culture is very sexist towards women. This is shown when the women are expected to do all the cooking and cleaning while the men go to work. Overall I am really enjoying this movie as it is not just about football but it's also about culture.

~Ailsa

They believe that women should do the cooking and cleaning and most housework in general. Get a job but certainly not play soccer. Both the dads are less strict on these rules but jess dad still supports her mother, I think that's very unfair and I don't blame jess for lying about her whereabouts
