The Rule of Law is a concept, an idea. It's a concept that helps keep everyone in order and under the law. Which includes citizens, the law enforces, and Politicians. If the Rule of Law was not enforced anyone could do anything and get away with it. Which means that the government could give immunity to specific people. People who work for the government, very wealthy people, or even famous people like Matthew McConaughey. For example, the President could murder someone and simply slip away from it with no consequences, or you could be crossing the street and someone just simply ran you over because they did not feel like stopping for you. They would be able to get away with it without consequences. The Rule of Law is a solid foundation of the government system.

The rule of law is a legal principle that includes four key characteristics which ensure that laws are just and widely accepted. The first is equality, meaning that laws must be applied to everyone regardless of status. The second is the need for laws, which ensures laws exist to regulate behavior deemed unacceptable. The third is clarity, meaning that laws must be clearly written, not easily altered, and widely understood. The fourth is change, which allows laws to be modified when necessary, as long as the proper procedures are followed.

The rule of law can be described as the fundamentals of a governance. It surrounds the needs of the people, is comprehensible as well as accessible. It ensures equality and change within a society. This helps maintain order, justice and balance.

In daily life this is important as it immediately impacts our freedom of speech, our rights, and sense of security. With the rule of law, we can be assured that no one is above the law. Should anything happen, we can trust that it would be dealt fairly and justly.

An example of this in current events is the bill that was recently passed in Iraq. This goes against the rule of law as it does not protect its citizens, maintain security, or surround the needs of its people — leaving its most vulnerable without standard human rights. Children as young as nine can legally be married as opposed to the previous age of eighteen. When laws do not protect its people, it not only weakens trust with its society but also can lead to further injustices.

The Rule of Law is described as the principles of governance that relate to the needs of the people. All "levels" are held accountable in accordance with these laws. They are publicly accessible, equally enforced and conform to the beliefs and values of that society. It includes four key characteristics to ensure that the laws are generally accepted and followed. The first is need. These laws are created to reflect a need to regulate behavior and reflect the beliefs of society. The second is the law being written. When the law is written, it ensures that everyone is aware, and that the law is unable to be taken away or altered without a process. The third is equality. The law has to apply to everyone, even the government. The fourth and final characteristic is change. The law must be able to change to reflect the times and to adjust for the sake of justice.

How to explain the Rule of Law to a fellow student

So imagine if people could do whatever they want. Stealing, cheating, or even harming others without any consequences. Society would be chaotic and unsafe. The Rule of Law presents this by ensuring that everyone including even presidents, prime ministers, and wealthy individuals follows the same laws. It creates a fair and just society where laws are clear, enforced, equal, and protect people's rights. Courts and law enforcement should remain unbiased and independent to uphold justice. The rule of law is essential because it prevents corruption by ensuring that powerful individuals cannot exploit the system, protects human rights by safeguarding freedoms such as free speech and fair trials, and maintains order and peace by fostering trust in a fair legal system.

Challenge: Briefly mention a current event involving threats to the rule of law.

A major challenge today is the rise of authoritarian governments that undermine the rule of law. For example, in Russia, the government has suppressed political opposition, controlled media, and influenced courts, limiting free speech and fair elections. This threatens democracy because leaders are acting above the law instead of being accountable to it. To be fair, Russia is Russia, another example in the U.S., is the January 6th, 2020 Capitol riot where a mob attempted to overturn the results of the presidential election of 2020. The event highlighted how political extremism can challenge legal institutions and the democratic rule of law.

In conclusion, the rule of law is the foundation of a fair society. Without the rule of law, corruption, inequality, and injustice take over the society. Defending it means protecting liberal democracy, human rights, and fairness for all.

The Rule of Law is important because, without it, we may not have clear and fair laws in our society. It impacts our daily lives as it determines all the laws we need to follow in our society. A current event involving threats to the Rule of Law is the inauguration of Donald Trump, as he is facing many legal challenges, which leads people to question if the legal system is fair or not.

The Rule of Law is the basic moral code that supports all laws in society. It is a collection of logical, ethical standards that all laws must follow in order to be necessarily abided by. Rule of Law supports laws with values and upholds them in a humane manner. There are four building blocks of the Rule of Law… need, written, equal, and change. These four pillars help to ensure that laws are being respected and followed.

Rules of Law

The rules of law consist of four different laws. The first rule of law is “need”, Which states that our laws should keep people in check. (Mainly people who’s views don’t align with the general public’s. The second rule of law is “written”, which means that all laws should be easily accessible and easy to understand. Thirdly is “equal”. This rule of law says that nobody is above the law, so all laws are applied to all citizens of the country. Lastly is the fourth law, which is “Change”, which just states that any law has a set procedure that has to be followed to change it. I think that all four of these rules are very important. They make sure that our laws are fair and justified. Without them, there would be all sorts of problems and shortcuts to get around the law. One way that I could see the rules of law being challenged is by the use of A.I. Maybe there’s a future where A.I. decides our laws instead of humans, but I think that would be very far in the future.

What prevents our society from descending into anarchy? The reason the law works is because of a principle called the Rule of Law. The Rule of Law is accepted by us because of the following principles. We accept the law because we have a need to keep our society safe and keep people from doing whatever they want, otherwise, anarchy ensues! Secondly, due to the Law being written down and accessible to the general public, we are able to follow the Law better and people are aware of the Law, as opposed to it just being an abstract set of rules that no one follows. Writing down the Law ensures that the Law will be obeyed: you can’t pretend a law doesn’t exist or change it on a whim to suit yourself! The Law also works in an organized fashion, where everything follows a set process. Importantly, NO ONE is above the law, even the government! Justice is blind, as goes the saying. All are equal in the eyes of the law. However, to make sure that the Law stays relevant and helpful in our quickly changing society, the Law is certainly subject to change over time and as society evolves. For example, we no longer need laws about dueling in Canada. We used to have a ban on dueling (previously in section 71 of Bill C-51) but obviously that’s not applicable to us today. Society does change a lot over time morally, technologically and culturally, thus the law reflects society. Of course, there’s a set procedure to change the law or make a new law, to ensure that the law is fair and no one underhandedly benefits from the laws made. After all, the point of the Rule of Law is to ensure that basic rights are respected, and that everyone is treated equally under the law.

An example of a threat to the rule of law would be the Poland constitutional crisis. According to a paper/brief by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, “Since late 2015, Poland has been facing an on-going rule of law crisis. The governing majority, Law and Justice, adopted a number of bills that threaten Polish constitutional democracy, stability and in effect, the system of protection of human rights. The governing majority aims at changing the entire system of the state in violation of the Polish Constitution.” The Polish government was met with a lot of resistance from within and international attention, due to these violations to the Rule of Law. Thankfully, since 2023, Poland’s new government has been working on reforms and slowly fixing the problem, according to a brief published by the GMF (the German Marshall Fund, a research institute).

The 2nd characteristic of law is Written law. We need the law to be written so everyone can find it and understand the law. The 3rd characteristic of law is being equal. The law must be equal to everyone, even the government or else it wouldn't be fair. The 4th characteristic of law is change. There must be a system in place to change laws easily and to follow and keep up with technology.
