         <title>Chapter 8: Developing Meanings for the Operations</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1) Helping students learn the different meanings, interpretations, and relationships of the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can assist them in accurately applying these operations in real world settings. </p><p>2) Multilingual learners can still benefit from contextual problemsby removing unnecessary vocabulary words. A visual aid or modeling the story can be effective in math.</p><p>3) Manipulatives are a helpful tool when teaching addition/subtraction/multiplication/division.</p><p>4) There's confusion when teaching dividing a number by zero and oftentimes teachers just say it's "not allowed". However, using a scenario like "Can you show me how to share 5 oranges with 0 children" can clear up confusion. </p><p>5) When teaching word problems avoid having students search for a key word to determine if they should use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Chapter 9: Developing Basic Fact Fluency</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1) Students move through three phases in developing fluency with basic facts: counting, reasoning strategies, and automaticity. </p><p>2) There are two approaches to teaching the basic facts: memorization and explicit strategy instruction</p><p>3) Memorization is less effective than a strategy based approach because there are too many facts to memorize and won't check their work.</p><p>4) Explicit strategy instruction is intended to support student thinking and building generalizations rather than giving the students something new to remember. </p><p>5) Timed tests are not effective because they measure automaticity but you don't always know how much time was spent on each question. They also don't accurately provide the right data to ensure a student is automatic.</p>]]></description>
