CONNECTED, BUT ALONE?

Technology has made a big difference in our society such as communication, work, education, and entertainment in good or bad ways. It improved our lives and the present things are now better faster, easier and more convenient. However, people tend to abuse and misuse it, and most especially it became a problem to the society if users became addicted to it.

I agree to what Sherry Turkle said during her Ted talk regarding the use of technology, "Connected, but alone?". On her speech she said, that we are getting used to a new way of being alone together wherein people want to be with each other, but also elsewhere.

Let me give you an example from my personal experience which I think most teenagers can relate. I use to meet my best friend atleast once a month. Upon meet up, we talk a lot but later on we're busy with our phones, silent and we feel alone together. We replaced real-world activities and face-to-face interactions, with virtual experiences.

I also agree on her discussion about human relationship that is rich, messy and demanding, and we clean them up with technology. And when we do, one of the things that can happen is that we sacrifice conversation for mere connection. We short-change ourselves and over time, we seem to forget this, or we seem to stop caring. One example is we prefer to post our rants and problems on social media instead of sharing it to our family or to anyone close to us because we feel like no one is listening to us and so it results that our relationships with technology is very much important. Truly, we are developing robots, called sociable robots, that are specifically designed to be our companions.

Technology fulfills our natural human need for stimulation, interaction, and changes in environment with great efficiency. However, technology use must not be excessive. It is important for us to understand that yes, technology is an amazing thing; but at the same time, it should not be used all of the time. They should not be overly dependent on it and we need to learn that sometimes, technology is not the right answer for a situation.
