@smelvin:
Let's start here: I truly believe that in order to empower our students we have to believe in them. They need to feel respected and safe to explore ideas, concepts and processes. They need to be safe to fail, and supported to push to find solutions, regardless of the discipline.

@LongoriaLori
I love starting with doodling and moving into Zentangling. I like to use Zentangling as a daily warm up in students' sketchbooks. I love the book One Zentangle A Day by Beckah Krahula and all of the Zentangle workbooks 1-10 by Suzanne McNeill. They are really great and inspire my students. I've found a doodling You Tuber who is fun to watch and who gives my students inspiration to really let go and just draw. He has tons of videos to watch, nothing how to really, but I like to have him on while the kids are in their doodle stage. His name is Peter Deligdisch and this is one example of his videos, has so many. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kpf2AMs9W_0
I also love the Art Lab books, there's lots of mini lessons and lots of use of found objects; I love that. Art Lab for Kids, by Susan Schwake, Print&Stamp Lab by Traci Bunkers, Paint Lab by Deborah Forman, Drawing Lab for mixed media artists by Carla Sonheim and Collage Lab by Bee Shay. They are all great little books and on Amazon. There may be more, but those are the ones I know of.

One of the most difficult things to do in the digital art classroom is to make the art more *real*... It mostly exists in the computer realm. After finding the art of Sebastien del Grosso, I saw a way for students to merge both worlds. Students had to take a self-portrait then create a mixed-media work based on that portrait. It made the students more thoughtful and creative in their process of creating a digital photo that really revealed who they are.

http://interrete.org/unbelievable-combination-of-sketches-and-digital-photography-by-sebastien-del-grosso/

--Wendy Smith @wordsmithMMS

Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it really helped me look at my creative energy from a new perspective. If you teach high school or young adults, I would recommend it to our students too. We have it in our school library, and I will be recommending it to my students

@immandymatthews #taeaIM
I would have to say this is one of the best things for my classroom. I know kids want me to know who they are, even if they act otherwise. I challenge myself to know all of their names by the end of the first week of school. To help me, I have them create a foldable that includes their name and 3 things about them in picture format. I collect them on the way out and put the name to the little personal facts. When they come in the next day, I hand them out and try to recall the pictures. I say the student's name each time I call on them. I do this all week. They love being known.

During the first days of school, the kids put their name and class period on my birthday calendar. Whenever a birthday rolls around, we all take a quick minute to sing "Happy Birthday" and celebrate that person. I write them a little birthday card acknowledging something that I like/admire about them and give it to them, too just to make their day a little sweeter.

At the end of every 6 weeks, I make a big deal about someone that has shown exceptionally good character. Their work has been good quality, they listen, are respectful, helpful, kind, put out effort, and just a great kid in my class and from what I have noticed around campus. The entire class celebrates this recognition and they are so happy for the recipient. I send a note home to the family of the award and I host a pizza lunch for all the kids that were acknowledged. They take a selfie with my iPad and I print it and post it on the wall for the entire campus to know that these kids rock.

I try to make 3 'just because' contacts a week with families. If I can I don't want the first contact be a negative one. I have found this to be so incredibly helpful when building trust and communication between kids and their families.

So, I have $20 Forgetful Fee. Life gets awfully hectic and I need help. I have an accountability partner. NewsELA.com is a free signup and has articles in its Arts & Culture section on artist and topics such as careers in art. Best thing is you can change the lexile of the article to fit various student needs. It also has a writing prompt and a short quiz. Can be printed out for the student. Also should work w/GClass too.

Coding in Art

One of my favorite things to do with my students is to introduce them to ways technology is being used to create art and have them experiment with generative art. Nick Briz http://nickbriz.com/ is one of the artists whose work we explore. He has a really interesting website but it isn't school appropriate so I don't just let the kids loose with it, we explore it together. Below is a part of his website where you can look at his work and then see the actual code he used to create it. You can also change the code and see how it will change the work. At the elementary level it is more for a teacher-led introduction but I think higher-level students could spend time interacting with the site. @kathleenzeigler
