I chose the focus area on post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because I wanted to bring awareness to how PTSD can have an impact on forming and maintaining healthy relationships. I was personally diagnosed with PTSD in 2018 and one of the hardest parts of my journey has been learning how to set boundaries, communicate, and trust. How PTSD may interfere with relationships is by creating barriers for intimacy and self love. The survivor may feel a strong bond to a healthy relationship but getting too close to someone may feel unsafe. Which we, as humans, need that social connection for our emotional and mental health.

Humans have been exposed to trauma since the beginning of time. What we as a species have endured and what we have witnessed over the centuries has been profound. The term PTSD officially was announced in 1980 when the American Psychiatric Association added it's Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders. About 8 million Americans suffer from PTSD every year (Friedman, 2007).

The Social Connection is one of the pillars of Health and Wellness. Having that connection is vastly important to a Clients emotional and mental well being. As a coach, we can help support them by creating a stress management plan, having the client create a personal support network, self-care regimen, and just discover things that work for their specific situation.

What I have learned is that all of the pillars of Lifestyle Medicine are energy that work together. You can not have one without the other. Learning about each pillar I have gained insight to different areas that clients may want support in. As a coach, Lifestyle Medicine has allowed me to dig deep within myself. When you work on yourself you gain that compassion and empathy for others.

The national center for PTSD has stated that PTSD survivors may experience problems in their close relationships. It can be hard for the survivor and the for the person they have a relationship with. PTSD causes the survivor to feel a lack of trust and communication, being able to create healthy boundaries, anxiety, loss of interest in activities, depression, triggers, isolation, and being able to feel emotionally close to someone (Bressert, 2018).
