The Meaning of the Beatitudes

	◦ In simple terms, the beatitude are eight blessings that were told through Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew that help us live a happy and positive lives under God. They are the representation of what the actions and attitudes of a Christian should be. They are the model examples and morals that Jesus followed that help us live a moral life that resembles that of Jesus Christ. “The Gospel message—particularly the Beatitudes— and Jesus’ very life are the model and example for how you are to live your own moral life. God made you to know, love, and serve him so that you might attain eternal life. God wants this for you; he wants you to be eternally happy.” (Your Life in Christ 119). These beatitudes portray how great of a man Jesus was since these eight blessings are what he stood by when he was on Earth and show his true passion. “The Beatitudes depict the countenance of Jesus Christ and portray his charity. They express the vocation of the faithful associated with the glory of his Passion and Resurrection; they shed light on the actions and attitudes characteristic of the Christian life; they are the paradoxical promises that sustain hope in the midst of tribulations; they proclaim the blessings and rewards already secured, however dimly, for Christ's disciples; they have begun in the lives of the Virgin Mary and all the saints.” (1717).
◦ Where they can be found in scripture
‣ The beatitudes can be found in Matthew 5:3–12 and in the Sermon on the Plain in Luke 6:20–23
◦ Importance of Jesus teachings about the beatitudes as they relate to his main message and
ministry of the Kingdom of God
‣ The importance of the beatitudes is they set the foundation of how we can live as Christians since they reflect the morals of Jesus’ teachings such as loving others and keeping peace.
◦ Discussion about how the beatitudes can have an impact on our lives in the 21st century
‣ The beatitudes lead to a great positive impact on our lives in the 21st century because they help us resemble the life of Jesus Christ as much as possible and are the list of model examples of how to live a moral life. This is due to the fact that the beatitudes are the countenance of Jesus Christ’s charity, and they express the vocation of the faithful associated with the glory of his Passion.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

 ‣ The “poor in spirit” are known by the Hebrew name “anawim”. These are people who depend on God for every possession in their life, and pursue it with a positive attitude and spirit. The anawim recognize their dependence on God and find happiness through using various traits to satisfy the people around them. “. They find happiness in using their talents, intelligence, and possessions to satisfy the needs of others” (Your Life in Christ 126).
‣ A person who exemplifies this beatitude is Denzel Washington. Washington grew up in a heavily religious influenced home. His father, Denzel Hayes Washington Sr, was an ordained Pentecostal minister so his father heavily pushed religion in his home. Denzel was not allowed to watch movies that did not include a depiction of a Bible story and his father heavily enforced him to read the Bible daily, which Denzel still does today. Before he discovered acting, Denzel had the intention to become a preacher. Once he became wealthy and famous, he would go on to assist many people in need. For example, “Denzel has donated millions of dollars to charitable organizations, and founded scholarships to help young people without means to study drama” (https://news.amomama.com/223275-denzel-washington-is-a-devoted-christian.html). Because he uses his talents and wealth to assist the needs of others, and is very dependent on God for his spiritual and material possessions, he is a great example of this beatitude.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.

 ‣ The people who “mourn” are those who undergo an unfortunate loss of someone they knew, this could be a family member, or even a friend. Mourning can do two things, it helps us recognize those who are truly in need such as the abused, and the poor, and it gives us a consolation and a deep sorrow that is greater than the sorrow we frequently feel. “First, it helps you to recognize those who are much worse of —the poor, the abused, the hungry, the victims of prejudice and discrimination. Second, the consolation you receive following deep sorrow is much greater than the sorrow itself” (Your Life in Christ 126). One way we can improve people’s feelings during mourning is providing any form of comfort, even a simple gesture such as a handshake or a greeting can create a positive monumental change to their mourning state.
‣ The person who exemplifies this beatitude is Arianna Grande. In one of her concerts in Manchester 2017, a bomb went off which caused many casualties and many injured victims. To assist the people who were mourning, she made the song “No Tears Left to Cry” which was written about the 22 deaths from the bombing, she wrote many messages to her fans on her social media accounts, and even visited the injured who were in the hospital from the bombing. Although she has drifted from her Roman Catholic faith, she definitely exemplifies this beatitude.

“Peace does not mean only an absence of war. The Hebrew understanding of peace—shalom—- means helping others enjoy all of the good that life has to offer” (Your life in Christ 128). This beatitude wants us to not be passive. We must be active. We must show compassion to others and unite with each other. This all combined helps us reach God’s kingdom.
Martin Luther King Jr greatly exemplifies this beatitude. He is a great example of a peacemaker. King played a key role in earning rights for African Americans during the civil rights movement. He advocated for peaceful protest and not violence. He perfectly exemplifies a person that unities and shows compassion to all. In his “I have a dream speech”, Kimg showed he was a peacemaker as he called for everyone to be equal.

This beatitude ask us to exemplify forgiveness with others. We must forgive others if we want god to forgive us. “Beatitude encourages empathy—thinking, feeling, and acting from another’s perspective rather than your own.” (Your Life in Christ 127). By forgiving others God feels more empathetic towards us. This can help make him more merciful when we enter the kingdom of God.
A person that greatly exemplifies this beatitude is Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa is known for her time spent helping the poor in India. She once said “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.”. This greatly shows the beatitude because mother Teresa is encouraging us to be empathetic towards others.

The life of a Christian is not always an easy one. “No cross, no crown” is the way that the Quaker founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, once put it. To stand up for what is right—especially in the face of mockery, rejection, and verbal and physical abuse—is to stand with Jesus Christ and help him carry his Cross. At times Christians have to pay the price for their convictions, even to the point of paying with their own lives. But the Cross is the ultimate sign of victory, not defeat. Accepting the Cross is the way to heaven and eternal happiness. St. Rose of Lima said, “Apart from the Cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven (Your life in Christ 128).”

Miguel Pro is an example of someone who lived out this beatitude. Miguel was a Jesuit priest from Mexico. In 1926, when Pro arrived to Mexico City, President Calles banned all public worship. Since Miguel was not known as a priest, he secretly celebrated mass, heard confessions, gave communion, and anointed the sick. He did this from the purest depths of his heart and in order to alleviate some of the suffering from the poor. In 1927, a bomb was tossed towards Calle’s car that was owned previously by one of his two brothers. All three brothers were condemned to death by firing squad. Everyone expected Pro to die cowardly, but instead he refused the blindfold provided and welcomed the bullets with his arm put in the form of a cross. He shouted “Viva Cristo Rey!.” Many Mexicans later came out to honor the martyr.

This beatitude includes three virtues: charity, chastity, and orthodoxy. Being clean of the heart means to purify your heart so that you may be able to love and see the world as God sees. If you have a good heart and don’t do bad things you shall see God. In order to be clean of heart, we must confess our sins and be cleansed from all unrighteousness. When we are clean of heart, we are close to God and can more clearly understand his plans for us. “Even in this life, this beatitude helps you to see as God sees, to accept other people as your neighbor and to view them as temples of the Holy Spirit and as expressions of God’s own beauty” (Your life in Christ 128).”

Jessica Simpson is an example of someone who lives out this beatitude. This is because she practices the virtue of chastity and remained pure until marriage. By saving herself for her partner, she kept her heart clean and wasn’t blemished by the sin of sex before marriage. She received a purity ring from her father when she was 12 and chose to remain a virgin until after she was married until her lifelong partner, Nick Lachey. She said that remaining chaste is the thing she is most proud of in her life. In doing this, she brought herself closer to God and was able to love and see like him.

It is also saying to look around and be cautious of what people need and to put those needs before yours.
-Nick Cannon has made volunteering a family affair, taking son Moroccan and daughter Monroe to the Los Angeles Mission to donate their time.
