You bring up some great points of discussion on Pershing. You allude to his style of war, (open war no trenches) and his aggressive behavior as being justified in the second world war. I think you are absolutely correct and I also think that he undeniably influenced the second world war. However I also think Pershing missed the mark in some regards. He was a rifle and sword kind of guy, he discredited artillery, armor, and air power. His disregard for tanks led Patton to leave his command and pursue his military career via a different avenue. Still I do think Pershing was great, or at least very good. I think he was what the U.S. needed at the time for our presence in WW I. He knew how to take criticism, and was able to make changes to better the military as a whole. It is interesting that you acknowledge being from Missouri and not knowing him. I know there is a Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, my ex wife's Uncle was stationed there and I have been on that base. I wonder why it was not named Fort Pershing? Leonard was almost given command of the military during WW I but instead it was given to Pershing, does he have a base named after him?
