Greece is a Parliamentary Republic. Every five years, Parliament elects a new President. The current President is Prokopis Pavlopoulos. The decision-making body consists of the Prime Minister, Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Ministers without portfolio. Alexis Tsipras is the current Prime Minister of Greece. The Prime Minister is Head of Government and the President is Head of State. The President lacks political power, but has a few duties. The President represents his State. Unless Parliament is dissolved earlier, elections are held every 4 years. source: https://www.mfa.gr/usa/en/about-greece/government-and-politics/

"Members of the Greek parliament are elected by secret ballot to 4-year terms; however, elections can be called before their term is up. To prevent political parties from dividing and to ensure there is always a parliamentary majority, Greece uses a complex proportional representation electoral system." Parliament elects a new President for a five-year term. The President is eligible for a reelection for one more term. "As of 2001, there are 5 main political parties operating in Greece: the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), New Democracy (ND), Political Spring, Communist Party of Greece (KKE), and the Coalition of the Left (SYNASPISMOS)." A party has to have at least 3% of the nationwide votes in order to qualify for Parliament. "Greece is divided into 51 prefectures, each led by a "prefect" who is elected by direct popular vote. There are also 13 regional administrative districts (peripheries), which include a number of prefectures led by a regional governor, the periferiarch, who is appointed by the Minister of Interior." source: https://www.nationsencyclopedia.com/economies/Europe/Greece-POLITICS-GOVERNMENT-AND-TAXATION.html#ixzz5dv3RuDUc

Republic vs. Monarchy

Republics and Monarchies are very different government forms. Both forms of government have been around for quite some time. In a Republic, the people have more of a voice and some authority, unlike a Monarchy. The way power is distributed is different. In a Monarchy, the King or Queen holds the most power. Representatives of the citizen body rule Republics. People have the choice to elect their representatives in a Republic, in a Monarchy, roles are inherited. Leaders in a Republic serve in terms rather than serving until the leader dies or resigns. source: https://debatewise.org/debates/2526-republic-or-monarchy/
