"Nature, in the common sense, refers to essences unchanged by man; space, the air, the river, the leaf." (Emerson)

Emerson is explicating that nature is a force to be reckoned with in relation to men. Emerson, throughout the essay, details that while men do have the power to destroy nature he is no match for it's vastness. Emerson demands respect from men for nature, and describes just what "nature" means to ensure no place is left disrespected.

Only few grow up and still learn to appreciate and understand the value of nature and what it can do for people. Most often, people have forgotten that life is not all about work and materialistic items and their priorities in life have greatly shifted. Sometime people have just simply forgotten that life is much more than a daily routine and learning to appreciate the smaller things in life.

Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild perfectly displays Emerson's ideas of transcendentalism, as well as his naturalist policies. As Chris McCandless goes into the great unknown, alone, he follows many of Emerson's ideas, such as the idea that one can only find oneself in the company of nature. McCandless spent months alone discovering who he was and how he wanted to live, and trying to respect nature which surrounded him.

Emerson was a notorious advocate for following intuition, or a gut feeling. He was a man who followed his passions despite them being highly unique at the time. In contrast the the articles about passion, which stated following ones passion is not always the best plan as it may be unsatisfactory, Emerson argues for the opposite. In the beginning of the essay from Emerson that we read he discusses going out into nature to simply find one self or what one may need to live a fulfilled life, and promptly executing what is found. As Emerson argues, finding passion, particularly in nature, is at the core of a fulfilled life.
