The most basic of dinner foods, though I am not sure how often most Dutchies still eat this particular dish: Hutspot. A staple for hundreds of years, it is a mix of potatoes, carrots, and onions. These are mashed together, and served with gravy and a traditional smoked sausage ('rookworst'). I personally love this any time of year, though it's typical eaten in winter.

The Spanish omelette is so much more than the sum of its parts. The potatoes and onions are slow fried in olive oil then mixed with the beaten eggs for the flavours to mix before cooking. Add chorizo, ham, spinach, courgettes or whatever you have to hand to make a tasty meal out of next to nothing.

In Holland we have a lot of different people, from a lot of different cultures. We make good use of all the cultural influences they bring with them. For example we have a lot of people of Turkish origin in the big cities. Kebab is not typical Dutch food of course, but we've made it one of or own. We mixed it with some lettuce and chips and top it off with some melted cheese. Et voila: a Dutch invented kind of food named: Kapsalon (after the barbershop where the idea was born). Though it may not appeal really tasty, it's actually the best thing to eat after a night of maybe one or two (or ten) alcoholic consumptions (too many) ;-)!

Eet smakelijk!! (Dutch for: 'Enjoy your meal')

I think in Holland we don't have a large own culture of food. The originally culture is small and not very refined. Of course there are a few dishes that became famous also in other countries. We are known for our cheese, our asparagus with sauce hollandaise and silted herring. What I don't like about our food culture are the lunches. They are simple and boring. They consist of sandwiches with cheese or ham or something in that way. Some people drink milk at theire meals. So I am not a fan of my own food culture. Fortunatly We can choose a lot of other food from all the different cultures.

The Netherlands does not really have a large culinary tradition, but the last few years our country has burst onto the culinary scene. A large amount of people now identify as foodies and in the last decade several restaurants managed to get three michelin stars, including one in the town where I have lived for most of my childhood: De Librije in Zwolle

Traditional food is a tough one for me since I’m not sure which culture I should relate to. When it comes to pastries however, I have to admit that I do have a strong preference for Iranian sweets.
The traditional Persian pastries consists of various types of baklava and Zoolbia has to be my favorite! It is made from a yogurt- and starch-based dough, which is fried before being dipped in syrup.

Traditionally, Dutch cuisine is simple and straightforward, with many vegetables and little meat: breakfast and lunch are typically bread with toppings like cheese, while dinner is meat and potatoes, supplemented with seasonal vegetables.

Nowadays the dutch cuisine is very international. Italian and American style pizzerias have become widespread. In recent decades, Arab and Turkish dishes have become increasingly popular as well, especially as a snack food. In larger towns and cities, small restaurants selling kebab, shoarma and falafel can be found on virtually any street corner. Nowadays, food from every nook or corner of the world can be found throughout the country, especially in bigger towns and cities, including Greek, Thai, Japanese and even African cuisine. I really love food and going out to different restaurants so for me it isn't a problem to have so many cultures in the Netherlands.

My favorite breakfast is bread with peanut butter and “hagelslag”. Especially chocolate “hagelslag”.
