Working with Water is a turn-based strategy web game helping teach students about developing and maintaining a sustainable water supply system in the Central Coast.

The game takes place in the Central Coast of Australia where the need for clean drinking water increases as the community grows, and the player is responsible for building new infrastructures to meet the increased demand.

Working with Water simulates the real life challenges of water management for the growing population of the Central Coast. The game will be an additional teaching resource for science and geography teachers who teach students in stage 3 and 4 (Grades 5-6 and 7-8).

Bleached Az is a mobile arcade game based on the viral 2008 Aussie cartoon, Beached Az. The game is full of confrontational and irreverent humour aimed at driving a social and environmental purpose.

Players must save the hopeless coral from the dangers of plastic pollution and overfishing, the game promotes ocean health awareness and motivates players to actively contribute to environmental conservation.

In partnership with Carbon Neutral, 20% of Bleached Az’s revenue from ads and in app purchases go towards their ‘Plant-a-Tree’ Program - that plants a tree to help combat climate change. Bleached Az aimed to educate players and bring awareness to the adverse effect of climate change through the in-game carbon absorption meter as it serves as a reminder for players of their tangible impact.

Original main character is pictured on the left. Firstly they are not appropriate for G rated game as they both have a weapon. Additionally, we decided instead of having a male and female main character we would use animals as this is better suited to our environment theme. The pink jelly fish is the original dowloaded icon. The blue jellyfish is the edited version that makes use of our brand colours.

For each button in the game I changed the style from clay to flat, to make it simple and more in line with out brand board. I had originally made the icons orange to fit the original style of the game. Upon later thought I changed the colour to blue as it was equally vibrant and more complimentary to gunmetal black colour.

We decided that our backgrounds may have been too 'busy' which made it harder for the player to recognise the 'villains' and 'fruit' they needed to collect or dodge, for our age group we thought it would be better to simplify the background therefore making the game easier, and therefore more enjoyable. This is something we would implement in our game in the future.

- 100% of students preferred the full screen option.
- 80% preferred the original background as the colour were more vibrant. The other 20% like the simpler option.
- 100% of students would have liked a mutli-player option.

- 100% of students said the game was an appropriate difficulty and use of colours
- Some students suggested using a different animal for the main character.

The world is feeling the dramatic effects of Climate Change more than ever in 2023, our company has decided that education around eco friendly and sustainable habits are the key to combatting the prevalent issues that are derived from poor sustainable actions, leading to an increase in unprecedented natural distasters across the globe, including floods, wildfires, tsunamis and earthquakes.

The data suggests that the best way to combat this issue is through effective and engaging educational practices.

We created this game for children aged between 5-8 years old with hopes of implementation of this educative game within both the school and home setting, through access to new and accessible technology where you can easily access the online game on most compatible devices.

How this relates to International Design:

As mentioned above, pollution and degradation of the environment are global issues. The game therefore is concerned with a global audience. The game mechanics are visual and transend language barriers, as wasd and arrows are universal controls.

Backstory - 'Trash Collector'

Jeffery the jellyfish and Kelly the crab are animals living in the natural environment that over the years has been polluted with rubbish, hazy smoke in the air, their on a mission to cross the different environments to bring awareness and clean up the world. The jellyfish begins his journey in a dark and polluted city, with very little fresh air, his aim is to jump on 'remove' the rubbish on his journey, while also 'collecting' the fruit baskets to keep his energy levels up through nutritious snacks. The Jellyfish and Crab take turns trekking through the different destinations, including the desert, the beach, the snow as you progress through the levels to ultimately reach the blue sky and green grass final destination where you can see a dramatic improvement in the air quality and amount of litter, creating a brighter future for the animals and people living together on earth.
