I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the young Evelyn Glennie concurring and thriving at her dream of being a profound Deaf world-renowned solo percussionist.   

I found the choice of words, narrative of the story, and illustrations so inviting to read over and over. To begin, I looked at the cover. I began by looking at young Evelyn Glennie at the bottom. Then the illustrations transported my eyes to be top with the title. The colors used felt warm and inviting. As I read through the picture book I looked at the pictures very slowly. I wanted to see if I could understand the story without looking at the words. The illustrations were clear to what the story was about. The illustrations weren't separated by the book binding. Evelyn Glennie wasn't "in half" on any of the pages. There was little white space within the pages. The use of the watercolor made the pages feel full.

According to Children's Literature Comprehensive Database, there are currently only two reviews for this picture book.  The two reviews were created by Angela Leeper of Booklist and Kirkus Review of Kirkus.  The review created by Angela Leeper shares about the challenge of Evelyn Glennie's role as a percussionist and the encouraging and determination to play music describe the doctors prognosis for her future.  

The second review was created by Kirkus Review of Kirkus. Similar to the review created by Angela Leeper of Booklist shares about Evelyn Glennie's profound ability to overcome her disability to become a profound Deaf world-renowned solo percussionist.  However, shares the opinion that the "wordy text and small font size" (Kirkus).  As well as stating that the book doesn't appeal to the hearing or oral Deaf children, but not an appropriate choice for children who are deaf (Kirkus). 

"Listen: How Evelyn Glennie, A Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion" has received two rewards. This book was a finalist for the Cybils Award in 2022.  This story received the 2023 Schneider Family Book Award for the best young children's title. 

According to the catalog records, there are two copies of "Listen: How Evelyn Glennie, A Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion".  There is a copy at the Lititz Juvenile Biography section and Mount Joy Juvenile Biography section.  This book is categorized as a nonfiction picture book.  

In the professional reviews, there are four reviews listed. There is a review form Booklist Online, The Horn Book Magazine, Kirkus Review, and Publishers Weekly. Booklist begins to describe the plot of the book. The Horn Book Magazine describes the inviting text and effective use of "color and pattern and movement to the musician's work" (Horn Book). To begin, this book has a main character, the protagonist as someone who has a disability.  The main character Evelyn Glennie loses her hearing at the beginning of the story, but shows her overcoming her struggles and becoming a world famous percussionist. Although this story is nonfiction, it qualifies for the award because it is a picture book.

Secondly, the author must display and give definition to a disability.  The author, Shannon Stocker clearly shows the progression of Evelyn Glennie's hearing lose. Shannon Stocker shows the reality for Evelyn or anyone who is beginning to face a hearing disability. She shares within the story how Evelyn's ears began to hurt and how she couldn't hear others as well anymore.  The illustrator, Devon Holzwarth illustrates a diagram of an ear to show where Evelyn was beginning to lose her hearing.  

Next, the style of the book is well written.  As reviewed by several book reviewers, this story is incredibly engaging and inviting for readers. 

Lastly, the book has beautiful illustrations. The text and illustrations in "Listen: How Evelyn Glennie" complement each other so well. The flow of the story is balanced with the text and the illustrations.
