I was called "the mother of the civil rights movement," I invigorated the struggle for racial equality when I refused to give up my bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama. I was arrest that day on December 1, 1955. I launched the Montgomery Bus Boycott by 17,000 black citizens. A Supreme Court ruling and declining revenues forced the city to desegregate its buses thirteen months later. I became an instant icon, but my resistance was a natural extension of a lifelong commitment to activism. Over the years, I had repeatedly disobeyed bus segregation regulations. Once, I even had been put off a bus for my defiance!!
