American Catholic writer, Brian Doyle, in his essay,
"Joyas Voladoras" (2004) emphasize the significance and valuable moments a human experiences during a lifetime. He develops this claim by comparing life to animals such as hummingbirds and whales and using its similarities to support the importance of the value in life a human spends. His purpose is to elaborate on the notability a lifetime holds, in order to persuade others to live life to the fullest. Doyles establishes a relationship of sensibility to convince the audience the worth of an individual's life.

Brian Doyle tone in

Joyas Voladares is sentimental, "...the brush of your mother’s papery ancient hand in the thicket of your hair, the memory of your father’s voice early in the morning echoing from the kitchen where he is making pancakes for his children." The authors sentimental tone allows the authors to list examples of cherished moments. The sentimental tone creates a soothing flow that allows the audience to see a new perception of life and to cherish every moment of it.

Brian Doyle also uses a passionate tone." When young we think there will come one person who will savor and sustain us always; when we are older we know this is the dream of a child, that all hearts finally are bruised and scarred, scored and torn, repaired by time and will, patched by force of character, yet fragile and rickety forevermore, no matter how ferocious the defense and how many bricks you bring to the wall." Doyle's passionate tone creates a sense of appreciation and value in life and its moments also in the quote "So much held in a heart in a lifetime. So much held in a heart in a day, an hour, a moment." Doyle passionate tone emphasises the importance of every moment in life,it allows the audience to see more value in life with the usage of his sentimental and passionate tone.
