Conventions, in terms of film. Are the themes and things such as types of camera shots or editing techniques that occur frequently within a film, or for a broader look, in genres.

Conventions are important since they are what makes the style or genre of a film. For example, a convention in a thriller film might be the suspenseful drone music used, whereas a convention for horror films could be jumpscares.

It is important for a director or producer to develop the conventions of they media products they're making so that it stands out from all the other products in the same genre that make use of the same conventions, otherwise it might be too similar to another film of the same genre.
Challenging these conventions might create something fresh and something unexpected towards the audience which they haven't seen before which could mean that the audience really liked the way the conventions were used in the media product as it made the film unique.

For example, the title sequence of Django Unchained has a soundtrack playing through it which was specifically made for the film, the music used specifically has old western elements to it to help display the genre. The music could also help create the tone and atmosphere as a hip hop song could help with creating the atmosphere of and tone of a crime film. The soundtrack could also contrast in opposition with the visuals, as a cheerful soundtrack with dark gory visuals will help create a sinister atmosphere and tone.

Mise-en-scene: Costumes that show who are the criminals. (Heavy backpacks. Usually rough dark-clothing or even small things such as a tattoo or body build.)
Location: A location key to the plot, in our case, it would be a jewellery shop. in the case of 'The Taking of Pelham 123', it would be the train. The setting should also be more urban and modern, and the colour palette for the film should be more 'dirtier and grimy' instead of bright. The lighting could differ in some scenes, but to add to the 'Thriller genre' the lighting should be darker at points to add to the tension.

Camera-Shots: Some of the shots should focus on key things of the plot, such as the faces of characters or small plot items such as jewellery and weapons etc. It isn't a mystery or horror film, so it's normal to give away quite a lot of plot information through the use of close-up shots.

Sound: The sound should feature a soundtrack to represent the character's background, possibly tense sounds for the Thriller genre.

The themes that should be displayed in our title sequence would be themes around the concept of crime, such as the pre-planning of a crime and the preparations right before it

The types of character you'd see would be a leader of the 'group' of criminals with his subordinates who are less prepared than informed than their 'boss' as they simply carry out the tasks that he requests. The subordinates are usually also less experienced and perhaps also of a younger age yet more physically able for their task.
