He seems to have a really bad life and he is extremely traumatized by not only the abuse he faces from the Socs but the abuse from his parents as well. The group tries to help him and be there for him but he is still missing the love from his parents. Dally and Ponyboy are the ones that show their love for him the most but no matter how much them and the rest of the group show they love him there will still be the hole that they can not fill no matter how hard they try. No matter how hard the rest of the group tries they can't be a replacement for the love he doesn't get from his parents even though they are horrible people. Not only does he have to watch his back outside he also has to watch it in his own house. Though Darry does love Ponyboy he just doesn't think he can show it. After his parents died he had to take care of his brothers and provide for them. They didn't have that much money from the beginning when their parents were alive so Darry had to work extra hard by getting 2 jobs. Ponyboy doesn't realize how hard it is for him since their parents died. He's only 20 and he has to take care of the family. He has to be the role-model for Ponyboy and Soda by not even crying at their parents funeral so he can be the emotional support for them. At the hospital he realized that Darry was crying because he missed Ponyboy so much. You could tell Cherry wanted to prove to herself and the Greasers that shes not some mean Soc and that they could trust her. When she became the spy for the Greasers, I was suprised because I didnt think they trusted her enough(since how they've delt with other Socs)so letting her be the spy was like a new level of trust between the Socs and the Greasers.
