The first microscope was developed by Zacharias Janssen. It was really basic as it was composed by a metal bar and two lenses, one at each end of the bar. He used them to observe blood, microbes, feathers, insects...

Robert Hook was an important scientist who investigated abotut physics, biology, navigation and architecture. One of his most important contributions is that he named the cells the way we call them nowadays. He named them this way because, as he was observing a thin layer of cork with a microscope, he thought they looked like cells, like the ones monks live in.

Theodor Schwann was a multifacetic scientist who studied the following areas among others: zoology, fisiology, histology and anatomy. His biggest contribution in the zoology field happended when he was observing animal tissues in a microscope. Scwann and Schleiden realised that the cell is the basic unit of life based on their similar conclucions and they also thought that cells appeared spontaneously out of nowhere, which they were wrong about.

Matthias Jakob Schleiden was a biologist who studied deeply the botanic field. Thanks to him, we know that plants are composed of cells because he observed plant tissues in a microscope. Shleiden and Theodor Schwann came to the conclusion that cells are the basic unit of life and they wrongly thought that cells appeared spontaneously.

Louis Pasteur was an influential scientist who dedicated his life to study about microbiology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, bacteriology... He also proved that Schleiden and Schwann were wrong about the idea that cells appeared spontaneously. He demonstrated that the cell is the structural, functional, and reproductive unit of life in its simplest form.
