Cultural Revolution: Its goal was to preserve Chinese socialism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society. Mao called on young people to "bombard the headquarters," leading to the formation of Red Guards who sought to destroy the "Four Olds" which were old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. The movement was characterized by violence, chaos, and the persecution of millions.

Great Leap Forward: Was an economic and social campaign led by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from 1958 to 1962. Mao Zedong initiated it to rapidly transform China from an agrarian society into an industrialized one. The central idea was that China should develop both heavy and light industries, urban and rural areas, and large and small-scale labor all at the same time. The core goal was to increase industrial and agricultural outputs by using mass mobilization to raise labor inputs and overcome China's lack of other material inputs. Private farming was prohibited, and those who engaged in it were persecuted.

The Great Leap Forward was a disaster, leading to one of the most severe famines in human history. Estimates of the death toll range from 15 to 55 million. The policies diverted labor from agriculture to industrial projects, resulting in a catastrophic drop in agricultural output. The Cultural Revolution also had devastating consequences, with estimates of the death toll ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions. It led to the destruction of historical artifacts, and cultural and religious sites, and the persecution of millions.
