Fillippo Brunelleschi is well known for developing a technique for linear perspective in art and for building the dome of the Florence cathedral. The dome took 16 years to complete and used complicated methods that modern architects still can’t understand.

Filippo Brunelleschi entered a competition to design the unfinished dome of the florence cathedral, Brunelleschi’s overseers were intrigued by his complicated ideas but couldn't fully understand it. To explain Brunelleschi held up an egg and asked if anyone could stand the egg up. when they failed Brunelleschi cracked the tip of the egg and stood it on the table.

The renaissance was a time of new idea’s and rebirth, Brunelleschi combined the two to create a new era of ideas for engineering and architecture including ancient Greek and Roman methods creating a personal legacy. Brunelleschi died in 1446, April 15th buried in Santa Maria del Fiore(Florence Cathedral) The completion of the dome was also very important and significant for the city of Florence because they now had the biggest dome in the world and the Cathedral was complete. While building the dome of Florence Brunelleschi also added pillars to the unfinished building for support this was the first times pillars had been used for support since ancient Rome and Gothic architecture.

Brunelleschi also developed linear perspective which radically changed Western art, making drawings feel three dimensional.

Fillippo Brunelleschi was a hard working secretive genius with a good sense of humour.

His first biographer Antonio Manetti, describes him as amiable, never known to boast, but easily provoked by insulting or disrespectful acts.

Hot tempered and stubborn. Brunelleschi’s stubbornness led to a shouting match with the overseers who had him forcibly ejected from the assembly twice, announcing him as “a buffoon and a babbler.”

Brunelleschi was a very secretive man unlike Leonardo di vinci he left no notebooks or sketches.He once said “To disclose too much of one's inventions and achievements is one and the same thing as to give up the fruit of one's ingenuity.

But not everyone thought of Brunelleschi as a great man. Giovanni da Prato a rival architect working for Ghiberti called Brunelleschi a “dark, deep wellspring of ignorance” and a “miserable and imbecile beast” in a poem he made.Giovanni also promised in the dark poem that if Brunelleschi completed the dome he would kill himself.

This is the blueprint of Brunelleschi’s design for the dome in the the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore which began in 1420 and was completed on the 25th of March 1436.
---------------------------------->

The dome’s structure was very special because of how it was built. As you can see in the blueprint there is an internal dome built inside the outer shell for surport actually a With no central support system and an uneven octagonal base without a direct centre, Brunelleschi had to build a dome over the Florence Cathedral. Though this sketch shows a lantern, the lantern was completed in 1471 by Baccio D’agnolo. Medici was the one who commissioned Brunelleschi to design the dome on the Florence Cathedral. Brunelleschi had some freedom, his only restraint was he had to build an eight sided dome because of the octagonal base.
