Unrest in Trumbull Park after Governmental Integration

In June 1959, residents of Trumbull Park rallied to protest in the streets of the neighborhood. Following the 1948 Supreme Court decision against restrictive housing covenants, an increased number of black residents have been moving into the historically white area. This has been a controversial decision amongst the parks’ residents, who have gathered repeatedly to passionately object the integration. Residents expressed their discontent verbally along with a physical incident, after a police officer violated the rights of a demonstrator, beating him with a club.

In an interview with the specific protester who wished to remain anonymous, a clearer idea of the situation was gathered. “We’re just here to use our Constitutional right to assemble and protest, and we were beaten down by these cops!” said the protester of the occurrences. “Those government people are allowing black folks to move into our neighborhood. They have their own houses! This neighborhood was peaceful before, and now the city of Chicago is messing that up.”
