Her grandmother, attended St. Michael’s Residential School in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan. While her father is Polish-Canadian her mother's side is Anishinaabe. She often visits her mother’s community, Fort Williams First Nation, near Thunder Bay, both in her childhood during the summers and for inspiration and valuable interviews throughout her projects. 

In 2009, Talaga moved to the Queen’s Park bureau wheres she could focus on writing pieces that she was passionate about, for example young Indigenous suicide rates. After that she wrote her first book, Seven Fallen feathers about the failure of justice systems, racism and education. Her second book followed: All our relations: Finding the path forward. She then went on to work at the Globe and mail where she has her own column and in 2018 and created Makwa Creative: “produces podcasts, TV shows and documentaries”(Cyca).
