How did you use the interests of your region to inform your presentation?

Our region has a lot of problems with education and poverty. Some of our group members have even seen these needs in person having volunteered in the region. In these countries, the main issue we all witnessed was the lack of teachers and availability to education.

In a number of countries in the region such as Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi high school enrolment is less than 20% according to Habitat for Humanity.

Despite being a general improvement in school enrolment in the region according to UNICEF in 2010 there were still around 9 million children of primary school age excluded from basic education.

We also saw that education was a solution to other problems affecting the region such as corruption, poor leadership and rampant HIV/AIDS endemic due to lack of awareness. We wanted to come up with a solution that could help both of those problems at the same time. The main idea of our education program, is that it helps educate people making them more prepared for a job which can help them come out of poverty and make better life decisions.

What is your problem statement?

There is a need for teachers in areas of poverty in Malawi, Kenya, and South Africa that leads to lack of education and high numbers of illiteracy. There should be a significant increase in the number of teachers in order to improve education in Eastern and Southern Africa.

What are three alternatives you've identified to solve the problem?

We created three alternatives to help major issues in Malawi, Kenya and South Africa. The first alternative is Eduvolunteer, which is a summer program at different Universities and Colleges that sends volunteers to teach students, children and illiterate people. The next alternative was a Non-Profit Group to send educational materials and other items such as foods, water etc. to impoverished areas. Our final alternative we came up with was a company to host Online Web Courses teaching different types of courses in impoverished areas.

Which of the three alternatives did you select and how does it connect to the interests of your region?

Of the three alternatives, we chose the Eduvolunteer organization. This program sends college students in the education field to teach courses in impoverished areas of Africa. We believed that directly placing educated individuals to teach and assist with teaching could impact hundreds of children at once. This is a necessity in areas like Malawi where people above the age of 15 only have a 62 percent literacy rate. (UNESCO). I personally have seen this method directly improve students educations in Malawi which is a country in our region. The in-person experience with these teachers is crucial. This is mainly the reason we chose this alternative rather than online courses for these students. Also, the lack of internet and technology would make it near impossible to educate these students without actually being present.
Our funding will be through universities with an education program. This can help give experience or even credits to students in college while tackling the problem of education. By making this a graduation requirement or an ability to gain credits in your major this would intrigue students to participate. Also, this is a good international advertisement for the colleges and may persuade people to attend the college or even to donate.
In addition to our funding thought we could partner with groups like The Qatar Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These organizations have long histories of donating to educational programs.
In order to track the student's progress in these areas, we decided to have them take a test before and after the program has been initiated. This will show us if the student's scores on the test increased and if our work as made a difference.
This connects to South and East Africa because this region has very low education rates and not enough teachers for their schools. This results in a high illiteracy rate and a high poverty rate. By educating the present generation we are fueling this region for the ability to become successful and break out of poverty.
