When Arvid was beat up by Emile, a leader of the HJ, Thomas fought back in one of his boxing classes, and ended up getting beat up himself. Emile told him that he admired his courage and the two became friends. Thomas had finally found a place where he fit in. He started to believe in Nazi ways of life, he snitched on his father for disagreeing with some of Hitler's laws, yelled at Arvid and told him that cripples would be next on the hit-list after Arvid refused to play traditional German music. Shortly after Arvid, a friend Thomas no longer had committed suicide. Thomas showed up at the funeral and attempted to talk to Peter but got the cold shoulder. He went to Peter's house a while later and was talking to Peters brother and when Peter walked in the two began arguing. Thomas almost threatened to turn his best friend into the Nazis and began to realize what he was doing. When the Gestapo came for his father Thomas was forced to see what he had done, what the Nazis were doing. One night he went with the HJ to bust a swing club and he saw Peter there. He beat him nearly to death and told him to leave, Peter refused and was pulled onto a truck on its wayto a work camp. He wanted to make something of himself in order to prove to his parents that he could. At the start, Thomas was the one who fought off a group of HJ boys who were protecting a swing kid, but after joining, he became one of the boys who he used to resent. The propaganda affected Thomas much more immensely than it did for Peter. He believed that the Jews, handicaps, and other people were not as worthy to live in Germany as the Nazis were. One choice he made was to turn in his own father, however, he did not know that any action would actually be taken. Then, he completely went against Arvid and said many awful things to him. Probably the most important choice Thomas made was when he almost strangled Peter after being on duty with the HJ and breaking up a Swing Club. Once he saw his best friend being taken away, Thomas began to reflect on all of his choices and what the HJ really meant. However, Thomas becomes increasingly enthusiastic about the practices HJ teaches, and soon is turned against swing and free-will as well as other recruits. By joining the HJ, it became clear to Thomas what was right and wrong, a sensibility which was desperately needed. Through his older teenage years Thomas was close friends with Arvid and Peter. Through the story Thomas and Peter both started to slowly drift away from Arvid. Because of this, Thomas and Peter tried to reconnect with their friend Arvid by stealing a radio for him and as a result of this Peter was caught and forced to join the HJ. Feeling responsible for Peter being forced into the HJ, Thomas immediately decided to go along with his friend and join. This was the start to his transformation of becoming a true, evil, Nazi. After this Thomas made several choices that urged his transformation. It started with the growing distance between Thomas and his two friends. Soon after, Thomas reunited with an old swing friend, whom was already a highly ranked HJ. This friendship, of Thomas' choice, created a new bond with the HJ culture and was another influence for Thomas to become a better Nazi. This new found friendship influenced nazification and made Thomas slowly drift apart from his friends. In the film you can observe the effect of the HJ taking a toll on Thomas. There is a big difference between "swing kid" Thomas and HJ Thomas. Another, and final, big change you can observe about Thomas is how, when he becomes an involved HJ member, he urges his friends to become Nazis. In the film Thomas uses his placement in the organization to urge his friends to become a part of it. But during the movie some of the people who did something bad they were willing to kill them self's although one guy did ended up killing himself by jumping off the bridge because he didn't want to get in trouble for peeing on the HJ  sign so after all i don't think that  joining the HJ is all that bad as long as u treat you and your with respect and actually not be that much of a jerk like Thomas did at the end of the movie . At the start of the movie we see Thomas as this fun loving guy who totally digs American jazz music and like the other ¨swingers" introduced throughout the movie he has some resentment to the HJ and Nazis in general but that slowly changes as he voluntarily joins the Hitler youth program because Peter is forced into joining. By this point he has already had some conflict with another one of the main characters in the movie Arvid because of accidentally scratching a record that belonged to Arvid then making an insult about his disability. His time in the HJ does nothing but increase this conflict between the two characters. He also had an internal conflict with his father which also only gets worse through his time in the HJ eventually reaching a boiling point when Thomas reports his father to his CO in the HJ resulting in his father being taken away by Nazis (this also ensures that EVERY family dinner or occasion Thomas will be that one kid that no one likes but they kinda have to deal with him cause hes family and if they don´t then its a possibility that they will get snitche- i mean reported on by Thomas and Hitler will soon be knocking). Eventually Thomas´ jerkishness reaches what you think would be the top it will get when his friend Arvid commits suicide and Thomas doesn´t care i mean the dude was literally the Nazi version of that mysterious guy at every funeral. His Nazi attitude creates a huge wall between him and peter oh and did i mention that it is all because Thomas liked all the new toys he was getting so he became like an all out Nazi and we all know that the only thing worse than a Nazi is a Spoiled Nazi. Anyway after a completely ridiculous fight between him and Peter (who by the way has proved that he is physically superior to Thomas on multiple occasions and even tho Thomas has a billy club there is just no way he would won, Peter LITERALLY throws a full grown man over his shoulder just seconds before the fight but you know the movie needs to be another five minutes long so I guess billy clubs are Peters kryptonite or some stupid reason like that) Thomas then tells Peter to leave because that totally redeems him from trying to strangle him just seconds before. He also listened to swing music. But after they stole the radio from the bakery and Peter was forced to join the HJ, because of this Thomas joined to because he didn't want to leave his friend behind. Thomas joined and started realizing the benefits of being an HJ so he went along with it. Eventually he started to get brainwashed by the HJ and started believing the ideology of the Nazi's. He also found new friends in the HJ and slowly drifted away from Peter. But the main reason he joined was for Peter and for the benefits of being a HJ. He thought that he would never be brainwashed.
