You can't expect to learn simply by TALKING about doing something all the time, and preparing your students for the "real world". You have to actually go out into the real world and do hands on tasks with them if you want them to be successful.

Students don't always need to be lectured about what to do in order to learn something.

They need to get up and actually learn! A good example would be if your class was studying characteristics

of plants, they don't need to see just pictures! They should go on a field trip to a botanical garden or

a greenhouse.

We take the meaning out of learning when we insist on generalizing it.

Students can learn math and physics through sports instead of some general

algorithm in a textbook. Let them see the effects of gravity on a ball and

how using excess force will make a ball go faster.

Working with others effectively is one of the most difficult yet important skills to learn. To me it is important that students begin to learn this process at a very early age. By creating a classroom environment where students work together to meet learning goals, it is more likely to be a successful classroom in which students can cooperate to encourage each other to meet goals.

This quote from the article is talking about how a physics course. It is imperative that students understand how what they are learning applies to the real world. Otherwise what is the point?

Why not use more group learning activities/projects?

The old saying says, "To teach is to learn twice." If you want your students to understand what they have accomplished, try to get them to articulate what they have just learned. If a student can teach what he/she learned to a classmate, you can be confident that your student truly understands the material.
