I feel SEL should be showing up in every subject, but in art there is some more room for students feeling proud of themselves with their completed work.

SEL is importance in arts education, and I don't actually think they're separate things. I think any art project, any creative form of expression, IS social-emotional. So in my own mindset, I don't necessarily want to think about how to incorporate SEL into arts education, or vice versa, because it's already there. Rather, I want to why take time to *point out* the social-emotional elements. Talking about why they've made what they've made, what it means to them, what it makes them feel, etc. Show them the way into conscious self-awareness. Because they haven't made a single creative choice by accident.

It's important for them to learn the language of kindness and showing others you enjoy what they created. It's also important so that they can develop a growth mindset through practice and learning tools to deal with frustrations or set backs.

It allows for deep thinking and exploration, and involves most of the senses as well as the physical body. Both art and SEL are about reflection and awareness, which is where growth, epiphany, and discovery happen.

SEL can be easily included in any of the arts in our school. If we can be intentional in our planning and really make students connect with a lesson, then they are sure to get something out of it. Students can share about their feelings through the art they complete, they can show support to their classmates and they can work through struggles. SEL is important in all aspect of school right now because so many of them don't know how to cope or handle hard situations.

You can indirectly talk about difficult emotions through art. Kids may struggle with a traumatic event in their life or simply struggle with feelings of growing up. Art is a safe place to discuss this without crossing the children's boundaries. As we talk about art we talk about emotions generally, not about a specific situation. Art teaches creativity, problem-solving, and how to look at anything through a different lens.

For some students this can be way they show their learning the best. Art experiences can open up students for enriching discussion concerning the things that are happening in the world around them, and gives them tools to express those feelings and thoughts. Art can be displayed in hallways, and serve as a tangible representation of those expressions (unlike conversations that only exist in the live time that they occur).

Without the expression, students can't get things off their chest. They might become sick or overly stressed. Giving them an outlet, art as expression, helps them to have better overall growth mindset. This translates to their self confidence and well being.

I think that overall SEL is highly important for students but having it in arts allows them to maybe create or express or work through emotional learning in a more open way. When teachers take the time to integrate SEL in to art it is just one more building block for them as they grow and learn. Students will all create products that look differently in art so being able to know and respect that difference is learning in itself. Students have to be able to handle themselves in order to interact with others successfully and to allow for learning to occur as they will be more leveled in their feelings and ability to interact with others.

Art and SEL is so important, art is a great way for kids to express their emotions in ways that can be hard to talk about. Art can be an outlet for kids to forget about things they may be dealing with or going through for a short period of time and let them feel free. SEL is about expressing ourself and understanding emotions, art can help express all of our feelings and can be a great healing source.
