The Opium Wars were between India, China and Britian. Britian was trying to sell something to China in mass amounts, but China was very self sufficient and did not need the things that Britian was trying to export, until they introduced the drug, opium. Britian was exporting opium to China and India and they did not like it because the drug was very bad for the health of their citizens. The leaders of China and India asked Britian why they were trying to push the drug upon their country if they knew it was so bad for their own country. This started the Opium War because Britian would not stop trading the drug and the countries' people became addicted.

These wars left a lasting affect that will never be forgotten. From the letters you can conclude that Opium was the way that people lived. Throughout the article it is discussed that opium was some part of everyones lives whether it was selling it and making a profit to being a user of opium. The opium wars impacted many people across the world, however it mainly impacted China. Opium was thought to be as a crime and people who dealt with the opium whether it was selling, buying, or smoking should have a death penalty.

It was a peace treaty between Great Britain and China and it ended the Opium War on August 29, 1842. Great Britain agreed to "peacefully" end the Opium war with China if: 1. China paid indemnity, 2. ceded the territory of Hong Kong, 3. agreed to establish a ¨fair and reasonable tariff¨ on imported and exported goods, along with many other provisions detrimental to China. It was first unequal treaty against China imposed by foreign imperialistic powers. Not only did the British impose these provisions, but they required access to trade at five different ¨treaty ports¨ in China, at locations of their choice. It was a very unfair deal for China, giving more access to western influences than China´s desired.
