Great Britain agreed to "peacefully" end the Opium war with China if: 1. China paid indemnity, 2. ceded the territory of Hong Kong, 3. agreed to establish a ¨fair and reasonable tariff¨ on imported and exported goods, along with many other provisions detrimental to China. It was first unequal treaty against China imposed by foreign imperialistic powers. Not only did the British impose these provisions, but they required access to trade at five different ¨treaty ports¨ in China, at locations of their choice.
