Thinking work- People required to think deeper in their jobs.
The idea of thinking work matters because previously in education, the goal hasn't been to include all students in the importance of thinking work, because the working field did not require many people to use extensive knowledge in their career. The changes in society have made it so that education is more essential for everybody to succeed.

Thinking work goes beyond a simple transfer of knowledge via memorization. It forces students to apply themselves in order to accomplish tasks. This matters because thinking work causes students to use higher order of thought which maximizes learning. This is relevant in a modern economy that values employees that are able to use their brain to solve problems or even reform industry standards.

Thinking work based on the section "The Need for Major Reform" is meant to use higher levels of learning in order to not be simply going over the subject matter for a test, or going over a book. Thinking work is meant to enrich the most diverse students coming from all sorts of backgrounds. It is meant to give them the tools to succeed in the 21st century. The problem is that we have no idea what the jobs of the rest of the 21st century would be.

According to the text, teaching work was designed to be routine, with little need for professional skill and judgement, and no built-in structures for developing these abilities. I think that is what was needed back then. What I understand about thinking work is that students are just suppose to learn basic skills. But, I don't think that is how our education system should be today. Our society has progressed a lot since then. Our students should be using creativity and innovation to solve problems rather than looking at a problem from a one dimension perspective.

Thinking work is designed to encourage students to think through their thought processes. It exceeds the normal memorization techniques and habits typical in schools, and allows students to apply themselves out of a school setting in an inventive way. It matters because it allows students to understand the "why" and not just the "how". Memorization ends after school, and intelligence and learning happens through the thinking process.

Not "teaching to the book," or getting through a curriculum with the goal of finishing the term, but rather teaching content in a way that inspires and motivates students to ask questions and develop a need to expand their knowledge after their traditional education has ended. Focused more on application in a context that requires a broad and thorough understanding, yet expects students to continue improving and exploring alternate techniques for maximized efficiency.
