Any where from life skills to organization. One of the best things that AVID has taught me is/was self confidence. Especially in math. For examples, in the beginning of 6th grade, I believe that I was just terrible at math and that I could not learn how to do it. Then I met Ms. Triplett. She opened up a whole other side of me that I love. Along with this, it has helped me stay on track and to stay organized. Some of the many things that I like about AVID are the feel of a family environment and also having people that I know I can talk to. Having the feelings of having a second family has helped me and many others in my class. Triplett is the kind of teacher that makes you feel like she in your momma. Some of the things that i have needed to talk to her about, like friends, I know that she will give me her honest opinion. This has benefited my academics because I can "get it off my shoulders." That's a good skill to have! It will make it a lot easier to find documents , presentations, graphs, etc. I have also learned time management. Before I couldn't find the time to do anything. I was procrastinating when it came to getting stuff done. Time management is a very important skill. without it I wouldn't be able to get any work done. I am a 7th grade AVIDer. This was my first year in AVID. In my experience in AVID, I have learned that AVID is an amazing place to help me future thrive. AVID has helped me learn so much about what my future holds. Not only that but what I want to do with my future. At first I found no point in being organized, but now I do. When you are organized you can stay on top of your work and when it's time to turn it in you will have no problem doing so. When I stay organized I feel better about myself. In AVID, every Tuesday and Thursday we do tutorials. Tutors come in to help us solve and questions or concerns that we have about our classes. I personally like doing tutorials because it helps me better understand what I am learning in my classes. AVID also helps me stay organized and prepare me for my classes. I am blessed to have such and AMAZING AVID teacher like Ms.Triplett. She has helped me make myself comfortable with who I am and who I would like to be. She and AVID have helped me set life goals that I can accomplish. The reason I say that so confidently is because AVID has taught me to be confident and to have confidence in everything I do, Also It has taught me to put 100% in each and everything I do. As of right now I feel comfortable telling each and every one what I AM GOING TO do in my future. I have learned to have respect for each and everyone around me. You may not agree with everyone but that's okay. AVID and Ms.Triplett have helped me through so much. When I go through hardships in my life I will always come to Ms. Triplett. She always has the right answer to my life problems. Sometimes it is easier said than done but I will ALWAYS trust her Advice and every word that will ever come out of her mouth. She is like my Godmother. The AVID classroom and environment is my second home. I am so happy that I was able to experience such an amazing program. All of these have impacted my grades tremendously at an astonishing rate. For example at the beginning of the year I was struggling to keep my grades high for I had not learned how to maintain any of these skills. I now urge to move forward in life and school. I learned how to take notes, how to make sure I’m working hard to bring my grades up, how to make a SMART goal, etc.
First, I learned that Cornell Notes are like a study guide. If done correctly, they can provide quiz questions, information, and summaries that can help you when studying for a test. When taking Cornell Notes I learned that you need to use the following steps. First, “notes on right." While you are going through a lesson, or reading, you should write down little bullet points on the right side of the paper. Don’t write complete sentences cause that could make things a lot more difficult to study. Next is “questions on the left." Once you have FINISHED the right side of your notes you add questions to each of the different sections. You should have 1 question per section. Make sure that you think when writing these questions. Don’t make them have one word answers. As Ms.Triplett told us at the beginning of the year: make sure you can answer them in paragraphs, or in detailed responses (no yes or no questions). The third step is to write your summaries. Once you have finished the right and left side you add a summary at the end. Just sum up your notes. Last you mark up the text. Use stars, exclamation points, and highlighting to label your notes.

Another thing I learned in AVID is how to make a SMART goal. This helps us to set goals for ourselves that are specific and basically give us the steps to achieve them.

One other thing that I will mention (there are many other things) that I learned in this class, is about your “Code”. Towards the end of the year we started reading this book called “The Code” by Mawi Asgedom. This book helped me and the class learn about five main steps to having a successful life. Each step showed us how to make sure that we are on the right track to success. It gave us examples on things that really happened, and activities to make posters, answer questions, etc. This book really helped me to see how important success is. It gave us things to think about. For one thing; the turbo button. This is something that we learned can help us go “turbo” in life, like in a video game. It explained to us that it’s hard to find, but once you do find it you have a higher chance of a successful life.

In conclusion, this year in AVID has really helped me. Not only on the way to college, but also to being successful in life.

Not having to go through all of my stuff, saves me time and effort. I use that extra effort for something useful, like doing my work. My grades improve a lot from TRF ’s and notes. My TRF ’s explain the things I don’t understand in class. For example, in math I have a lot of questions that I don't have time to ask. My TRF’s give me the opportunity to ask these questions so I can stay on track in math. This school started out overwhelming until my AVID skills started to kick in. I started this year with a messy binder, little skills in note taking, an unorganized Google Drive, and multiple unread emails. Because of AVID this has all changed. I now have an organized binder, Google Drive, and inbox. I know how to take Cornell Notes that I can understand and how to review them daily. We do TRFs every Thursday and Tuesday and my grades have been improving. AVID has also helped me with my communications skills. I know I can build up my confidence. I think that it has made me a more organized student. I use my agenda more often which helps me follow along when I’m doing my homework and be more productive at home. Ms. Triplett has taught me to stay on top of my work because grades do reflect your future. With organization skills, I have learned to discipline myself. I’ve learned to keep my grades up, manage my time, and make the right decisions on my own without anyone telling me.
