The Norse people live in a harsh environment with mild summers and severe winters. A theme in both The Death of Balder and The Theft of Thor's Hammer is vengeance. Their culture is very tough and they are strong people.

In The Death of Balder, Loki takes vengeance on Balder. Balder did not do anything to Loki, he is just jealous of Balder because everyone likes him. ¨He was the favorite of everyone among the gods because he was so good (468)¨. So, he decides to figure out how to kill him. He finds out only one thing can kill him and it is mistletoe tree. He goes to get the tree and tricks Balder´s brother, Hoder, into shooting Balder with it. ¨He fell to the ground dead (469)¨. The environment there helped Loki find the tree he needed to kill Balder. Norse culture has to do with Loki being mean and wanting to get rid of Balder.

In The Theft of Thor´s Hammer, Thor gets vengeance on Thrym for stealing his hammer. Thor pretends to be Freyja because Thrym said he would give back the hammer if he got to marry her. So, Thor dresses up as Freyja and Thrym believes it. When Thor´s hammer is brought out, he grabbed it and, ¨smashed Thrym to the ground (477)¨. Norse culture had an influence on Thor being brave enough to do this.

In both these stories vengeance was a main theme. Loki got vengeance on Balder and Thor got vengeance on Thrym.
