Christopher Columbus came to Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) in 1492, and built La Navidad (from the remains of his ship, the Santa Maria). He named it La Espanola. He later came back in 1493, only to find that La Navidad was ruined and and the men he left there were killed by Indians. Christopher Columbus is important to the DR's independence because he discovered Hispaniola.

Rafael Trujillo seized power in 1930, ruling harshly for the next 30 years. He allowed little freedom, killed or imprisoned enemies, and although the Dominican did much better economically under Trujillo's reign, the people did not benefit, because all profits went to him. He was assassinated on May 30th, 1961.

Rafael Trujillo
