The name comes from my Irish heritage. My grandfather is from Donegal, Ireland where two rival clans resided. Those two clans were called the Mickey Davis clan and the Patty Owen clan. It was forbidden to marry amongst the other clan yet my great-grandparents did! My parents believed that giving me a name from each clan would be a sign of unity and strength. Il also makes a good story to share if anyone asks!

Unfortunately, one of my father’s friends started rhyming it with “harlot” and “charlotte the harlot” worried my mother enough that they picked Rebecca, a name that doesn’t rhyme with anything and that my parents both liked fine enough. I love my middle name Isobel, it is the irish spelling and women on both sides of my family line have had it as a middle of first name for generations. My last name connects me to irish settlers on my fathers side, and we think it was derived from McCanney or some variation which is quite cool to be able to trace that history.

How I got my name: I was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario. My first name has no cultural significance; my parents just liked it. However, the pronunciation is something that has always haunted me. My name is pronounced "My-ah" and for the whole 22 years of my life, 95% of people call me "Mee-a". When I asked my parents why they spelled it like that, they had no reason other than that's how they thought it sounded (fair enough).

My last name is Ukrainian! My grandfather's parents came to Canada from the Ukraine when my grandfather was a baby, and our last name at that point was "Surkanovitch". For reasons unknown to me, they cut the name in half when their ship landed here and the name stuck.

However, I have come to reclaim my identity through a different lens spiritually, as Mary Magdalene also had the same name and was the first disciple of Christ. My name also literally means the Star of the Sea, a shining star leading those lost at sea.

I don’t honestly have a story behind my name, it isn’t tied to any important cultural, or religious beliefs. It’s just special to me because my parents chose to name me Megan. If I was born as a boy, my name would have been Nathan which is completely different to Megan.

My middle name is Elizabeth, and this name is special to me in a different way, because it is the name of my mom’s mom, who passed away before I had the chance to meet her. I have multiple people in my family with the name Elizabeth (either as a first or middle name) as a tribute to my grandmother.

My last name is Yik. It is the surname of my dad’s father. Interestingly, my grandmothers surname was YICK, and my grandfathers surname was YIK. So when my grandmother married my grandfather the only thing she had to change in her surname was a single letter.

Typically in our culture, a child is named after their father's parents. So, I was named after my father's mother. Naturally, I am reminded of how strong a woman my grandmother was when I think about the origin of my name. I don't typically have a nickname as I feel like having a nickname takes away the meaning and backstory of my name. However, this means that I have faced a lot confusion surrounding my name whenever I introduce myself to someone new. It is also the case that my name never seems to be spelled right (even when people are given the correct spelling!). When I was born my parents had narrowed down their name choices to three options, but they couldn't decide which to choose. So they sat my brother and sister down and told them the options, and they chose Erin. So my siblings will forever have that to lord over me. To this day my parents can't even remember what the other two name options were...my mom thinks one of them was Abby.

My last name is Church, I'm not sure of the significance. For the last several decades there has been an important tradition in the Church family relating to our family crest. When a man in the family turns 21 he gets gifted a family ring with the Church family crest on it (which is a greyhound holding a clover). I'm very proud to say my dad was the first to say it's time to change that tradition, and not me and my sister both have a Church family ring.

I like that I was always one of one Amber in my class, but as a Vegetarian and occasional Vegan, absolutely despised when kids called me Ambuger.. as in Hamburger.

As an adult I still face the same issues with my name. My boyfriend annoyingly calls me Amburger from time to time, and I am still left with the dichotomy of feeling proud to be an Amber, like the orange gem, and disappointed to Disney decided that my name was the name in virtually every show and movie created in the early 2000's. Part of me wishes my parents named me my middle name-Beatrice- like my Great-Grandmother, but I am sure if that were the case, I would find issue in that as well.

I was actually named Chloe for about a day before my parents changed my name to Sofie. I can't remember why they ended up changing it but I suppose they changed their minds. The name Sofie is the Danish (among other languages) spelling of the name. If I had to guess, it was probably my mom who found the name, because her family is Danish. I know that the name means 'wisdom', but I don't think it was much of a factor in me getting the name. In general, I really like my name. I've only ever met one other Sofie who spells her name like mine, so I think that's cool. But, when I was a kid, and even now, people didn't spell my name right, which used to really annoy me, especially in elementary school when my teachers would write 'Sophie' on the board and I would have to correct them over and over again. It even caused some actual problems, like I wouldn't get my work handed back or supply teachers would mark me absent or on the first day of school the teachers would be putting names on everything and they would spell mine wrong and have to do it all over again. Now it's more annoying than anything.

Hello!

The story of my name is really not that interesting. Essentially I was the first born grandchild in my family so everyone was very opinionated and so my mother decided to keep my gender a surprise until I came into the world. As far as I am aware, my parents had a very strong feeling I was going to be a boy and so a variety of boy names like Jacob and Jeremey were selected. Although it dawned on both of them when I was born a chunky little lady that they had not considered any names for if I was a girl. My mother worked as a RECE and so many names were banned from being an option and so my father left it to my mother to decide. Kaitlyn was very popular the year I was born but my mother changed it to Kailin due to bad experiences with students with the same name. Other than that I believe being a teacher she considered my name's unique spelling to be easier to learn to write as I got older. My last name derives from German background as far as I know and was once actually "Aylward" but my grandfather adjusted it when he married my grandmother to sound better. This is all I am aware of, tragic I know.
